BLUEFIELD, Va. -- Following a straight sets loss to Georgetown (Ky.) on Saturday, the Midway men's volleyball team had a quick turnaround as they began a seven-match road swing with a trip to Bluefield (Va.) on Monday.
Midway had a tough time getting anything going offensively in their loss to Georgetown as they managed just 21 kills, but on Monday, they got back into a rhythm and cruised to a 3-1 victory (25-20, 25-21, 24-26, 25-17).
The Eagles – who improved to 2-1 overall and 1-1 in Mid-South Conference play with the win – finished the match with 50 kills in 118 swings for a .280 hitting clip. Bluefield, meanwhile, finished with 42 kills in 115 attempts for a .148 attacking percentage.
Facing an 11-9 deficit in the opening stanza, the Eagles scored five unanswered behind a pair of kills from Adrian Constant (All Saints, Antigua) and an ace from Victor Bazzo (Gloria de Dourados, Brazil) to pull ahead to a 14-11 advantage.
The quick 5-0 rally provided the Eagles enough breathing room as they claimed the first set 25-20 to grab the early 1-0 edge.
The second stanza was another back-and-forth battle before the visitors turned a 14-12 lead into a 20-13 advantage on the heels of a 6-1 run. The Rams got within four, but back-to-back kills from Constant and Joey Boujaoude (Cincinnati, Ohio) gave the Eagles a 2-0 lead in the match after winning the second set 25-21.
Bluefield – who falls to 2-4 overall and 0-1 in MSC play following the loss – took advantage of Midway's miscues in the third set cutting the deficit to 2-1, but Midway put together a pair of 4-0 runs in the fourth frame to seal the 3-1 victory after winning the set by a final of 25-17.
Midway had two players eclipse double digit kills in the win led by Adrian Constant with 23 kills in 48 swings for a .333 attacking clip. Constant also added eight digs, while Victor Bazzo led the defensive effort with 13 digs to go with his 15 kills.
Joe Boujaoude chipped in seven kills in 11 attempts for a .636 hitting percentage, while Daniel Cogo (Padua, Italy) ran the offense and finished with a career-high 41 assists. Freshman libero, Jonathan McGuyer (Sierra Vista, Ariz.) tallied eight digs in a winning effort.
Jonea Rima's club will return to action on Thursday (Feb. 25) when they battle Milligan (Tenn.) on their way to Georgia for this weekends Mid-South Conference Crossover in Georgia.
