MIDWAY, Ky. -- Following a tough 3-0 road loss at Mount Vernon Nazarene (Ohio) earlier in the week, the Midway men's volleyball team returned to form on Thursday night by sweeping Thomas More (Ky.) in a Mid-South Conference matchup.
Midway held the Saints to a negative hitting percentage, while they posted one of their better hitting performances of the season en route to the 3-0 victory (25-20, 25-17, 25-17).
Midway – who improves to 6-6 overall and 2-4 in league play with the win – finished the contest with 31 kills in 64 swings for a .234 hitting clip. The Eagles also finished with eight total blocks and 11 service aces in the victory.
Thomas More – who falls to 4-9 overall and 2-6 in MSC play following the loss – struggled to handle Midway's serves as they carded just 21 kills with 22 errors in 63 swings for a -0.016 hitting percentage. The Saints also committed nine service errors to just two aces in the loss.
The Eagles came out firing in the opening frame scoring the first five points as they sprinted out to a 11-4 edge. Thomas More made a run late cutting the deficit to 21-20, but Daniel Cogo (Padua, Italy) served two aces as part of a 4-0 run leading Midway to the 25-20 win.
The second frame was back-and-forth until the Eagles took complete control after holding a slim 18-17 lead. The Blue and Gold scored the final seven points of the set behind the strong serves of Jonathan McGuyer. The freshman from Cincinnati, Ohio served two aces in the run as Midway claimed the second set 25-20 to take a commanding two sets to none lead.
The Eagles carried over the momentum in the second set to the final stanza where they sprinted out to a 14-8 lead before cruising to the 25-20 win in the final set for the 3-0 victory.
Adrian Constant (All Saints, Antigua) led the way for the Eagles carding 11 kills to go with four digs, two aces and four blocks. Franzso Severre (St. Thomas, Virgin Islands) added six kills and three digs, while Shmuel Williams (St. Croix, Virgin Islands) and Joey Boujaoude (Cincinnati, Ohio) collected five kills apiece.
Daniel Cogo ran the offense and dished out 26 assists to go with four digs and three aces, while Jonathan McGuyer chipped in four service aces and three digs in the win.
Midway is set to return to action on Saturday when they host Bluefield (Va.) and Carlow (Pa.) for a tri-match in Marshall Gymnasium. The Eagles play Bluefield at 11 a.m. ET before playing Carlow at 3 p.m. ET.
