Eagles unable to keep pace with Grenadier offensive attack

CHILLICOTHE, Ohio -- The Midway University baseball team opened play in the River States Conference Tournament on Thursday (May 6) when they battled IU Southeast (Ind.) at VA Memorial Stadium in Chillicothe, Ohio.

Following two innings of play, the Eagles held a 2-1 edge, but that lead didn't last long after the Grenadiers scored 13 of the final 16 runs to claim the 14-5 victory.

The loss drops Midway to 12-29 overall on the season, while it also sends the Blue and Gold to an elimination game on Friday. Luther Bramblett's squad will meet Rio Grande (Ohio) in the elimination contest at 11 a.m. ET at VA Memorial Stadium.

IU Southeast, meanwhile, improves to 41-13 overall as they advance in the winner's bracket where they'll face IU Kokomo (Ind.) at 3 p.m. ET on Friday.

The Grenadier's struck first scoring one in the top of the second, but Midway answered by scoring two in the bottom half. Casey Brown (Louisville, Ky.) reached on a one-out walk, while Skylar Lucas (Elizabethtown, Ky.) followed with a double putting runners at second and third.

The next batter, Marquise Glenn (Atlanta, Ga.), ripped a two-run single scoring Brown's pinch runner, Francis Mejia (Wesley Chapel, Fla.), from third and Lucas from second.

The two runs gave Midway a brief 2-1 lead, but that lead didn't last long after IU Southeast scored four in the third.

Midway got two runs back in the fourth on an RBI groundout by Lucas and a sacrifice fly from Glenn to cut the deficit to 5-4.

IU Southeast, however, responded with one in the fifth and seventh innings, while adding four in the sixth and three in the ninth en route to the 14-5 victory.

Ryan Lee Hayes (Lebanon, Ky.) got the start and was dealt with the loss. The left-hander allowed eight runs – seven earned – on 11 hits in his 5.1 innings. Noah Marion (Louisville, Ky.), Domingo Garcia (Cayey, P.R.) and Anibal Salado (Santo Domingo, D.R.) combined to finish the game.

The Eagles finished the contest with nine hits led by Marquise Glenn and Max Hill (Stockholm, Sweden) had two hits apiece. Glenn, meanwhile, drove in three and scored a run in the loss.
