Eagles outlast Bearcats to improve to 2-0 in RSC play

Box Score

OWENSBORO, Ky. -- After defeating Oakland City (Ind.) in their River States Conference opener earlier this week, the Midway men's basketball team continued league play on Saturday (Nov. 19) when they traveled to the Moore Center to battle Brescia (Ky.).

The Eagles trailed by 14 with five minutes left in the first half, but they rebounded in the second half and held a seven-point lead with 9:22 remaining as they would hold on for the 58-55 win.

With the win, Joe Krupinski's squad improves to 4-1 overall as they continue their perfect start to conference play moving to 2-0. The Bearcats, meanwhile, drop to 2-2 overall and 1-1 in league play following the loss.

Midway got off to a less than ideal start as they didn't score for nearly the first five minutes of the game. Brescia took advantage of Midway's offensive woes and jumped to a 9-0 advantage.

A Tobias Thompson (Louisville, Ky.) finally got the visitors on the board with 15:03 left in the opening half. A Dae'Shawn White (Newport, Ky.) triple cut the deficit to 14-9, but Brescia went on a 13-4 run to take their lead to its largest of the game at 27-13 with 5:27 left in the first half.

The Eagles slowly chipped away at the Bearcat lead thanks to the duo of White and Nick Keeton (Paintsville, Ky.). The two combined to score 12 points over the final 5:27 as Midway closed the half on a 12-4 run cutting the deficit to 31-25 at intermission.

The Eagles extended their run into the second stanza. Midway's run turned into a 26-6 rally after they opened the second half on a 14-2 run. Thompson was key in the run scoring six points as Midway took a 39-33 lead with 15:46 left.

A Rico Tate (Memphis, Tenn.) layup gave Midway their largest lead of the contest at 47-40, but Brescia responded with an 11-2 run as they took a 51-49 lead with 5:21 left. Keeton later hit 1-of-2 at the free throw line before putting his team ahead for good on a layup with 2:15 remaining in regulation.

Donnie Miller (Newport, Ky.) went 4-of-4 at the charity stripe in the final 1:18 as he gave Midway a 58-55 lead with under 30 seconds remaining. Brescia had one last chance to force overtime, but Mike Caswell's triple was off the mark as Midway held on for the 58-55 victory.

Miller led the way for the Blue and Gold with 15 points, while White scored 12 points hitting 5-of-7 from the floor. Keeton tossed a big time double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds, while Thompson also grabbed 12 boards in the win.

Krupinski's team will have a quick turnaround as they'll enjoy an off day on Sunday before returning to the hardwood on Monday when they travel to nearby Wilmore, Ky. to take on Asbury (Ky.) at 7 p.m. ET.
