Rally comes up short for Men's Basketball at Asbury

Box Score

WILMORE, Ky. -- After opening conference play last week, the Midway men's basketball team stepped out of River States Conference play on Monday night when they made the short trip to Wilmore, Ky. to battle Asbury (Ky.) in a non-conference matchup.

The Eagles faced a 61-54 deficit with 6:08 left, but a 12-3 run gave them a 66-64 lead with 1:48 remaining. Asbury regained a 69-68 lead with 11 seconds remaining as Midway missed a game-winning layup as time expired giving the home team the 69-68 victory.

Following the loss, Joe Krupinski's squad slips to 4-2 overall, while Asbury improves to 6-0 on the young season following the win.

Similar to their last outing against Brescia (Ky.), Midway got off to a bit of a slow start. They faced a 7-0 deficit before a Tobias Thompson (Louisville, Ky.) layup got them on the board three minutes into the game.

Midway soon rallied to tie the game at nine, but Asbury took their largest lead of the game at 30-20 with 6:12 left in the opening stanza. Creshaun Brown (Indianapolis, Ind.) then scored five consecutive points to spark an 11-0 run that helped Midway tie the game at 34 at intermission.

The opening minutes of the second half was a back-and-forth battle until Asbury took a 61-54 lead on a Dakota Walden triple with 6:08 left in the final stanza. Midway, however, didn't go away and rallied as they did in the first half.

Eight consecutive points by the duo of Donnie Miller (Newport, Ky.) and Rico Tate (Memphis, Tenn.) sparked an 8-0 run. A Will VanHook (West Palm Beach, Fla.) layup then gave Midway a 66-64 lead with 1:48 left in regulation.

After Midway missed the front end of a 1-and-1, Asbury's Nick Fort hit a tough jump shot with 11 seconds remaining that gave them a 69-68 lead. Midway raced down the floor, but the game-winning layup rimmed out giving Asbury the one-point victory.

Midway had three players score in double figures led by Brown who scored a season-high 20 points in the win. The junior guard hit 8-of-11 from the floor and 4-of-7 from the three-point line. Tate added 10 points and nine rebounds, while Miller chipped in 14 points in the loss. Thompson just missed a double-double with nine points and 15 rebounds.

The Eagles will now enjoy the Thanksgiving Holiday before returning to action on Friday (Nov. 25) when they take on Ohio Lancaster in the Central Bank Jim Reid Classic at Georgetown (Ky.).
