Box Score MIDWAY, Ky. -- Following a conference victory over the weekend over IU East (Ind.), the Midway men's basketball team stepped out of league play on Wednesday night when they hosted Simmons (Ky.) inside Marshall Gymnasium.
The Eagles held a 55-46 lead with just over seven minutes remaining, but over the final 7:25, the Falcons outscored the home team 21-10 en route to the 67-65 come from behind victory.
With the loss, the Eagles fall to 7-5 overall on the season, while the Falcons improve to 3-7 with the win.
Simmons would lead by as many as five in the early going before the Eagles claimed their first lead of the contest at the 11:50 mark on a layup by Will Vanhook (West Palm Beach, Fla.). Donnie Miller then added two freebies and a layup pushing the lead to five.
Midway's lead swelled to nine at 23-14 after Donovan Morris (Lexington, Ky.) drained back-to-back triples with 10:38 left in the half. Over the final nine minutes of the opening stanza, the Falcons closed the half on a 14-3 run to take a 30-28 lead into the locker room.
After going back-and-forth to open the second half, the Eagles regained the lead on the heels of an 8-0 run. Rico Tate (Memphis, Tenn.) hit a three to open the rally before Miller capped the run with an old fashioned three-point play as Midway took a 42-37 lead with 14:33 remaining.
A couple of minutes later, TJ O'Connor (Miami, Fla.) nailed a long trey and followed with a layup as Midway held a 50-42 lead. O'Connor later hit his second triple of the game as the Eagles seemed to be in control with a 55-46 lead with 7:25 left.
Simmons immediately responded with a quick 7-0 run cutting the deficit 55-53 with five minutes remaining. O'Connor gave the Eagles a 60-56 lead, but a triple from James Moore with 1:18 left gave the Falcons the lead for good en route to the two-point victory.
Miller led the way for the Eagles with 23 points, while Tobias Thompson (Louisville, Ky.) notched a double-double with 11 points and 14 boards. O'Connor also reached double figures in the loss with 11 points off the bench.
Joe Krupinski's squad will wrap up their opening semester on Saturday (Dec. 17) when they travel to Berea (Ky.) for a 2 p.m. ET tipoff.
