Box Score SAINT MARY-OF-THE-WOODS, Ind. -- After suffering a tough home defeat to IU Kokomo (Ind.) on Senior Day in their last outing, the Midway men's basketball team began their final week of the regular season on Tuesday (Feb. 16) with a road trip to St. Mary-of-the-Woods (Ind.).
The start of the second half saw the Pomeroys go on an 11-2 run to tie the game at 48 with just under 14 minutes remaining. The Eagles later went on a 13-4 run as they took their largest lead of the contest before claiming the 78-71 victory.
With the win, Joe Krupinski's squad improves to 15-9 overall and 8-7 in River States Conference play as they're currently tied with Oakland City (Ind.) for the fourth and final playoff spot in the RSC West Division.
The Eagles got off to a bit of a slow start after scoring just two points in the opening 3:16. They quickly shook off the slow start and found their footing thanks to the strong play of Raekwon Evans who scored nearly half of Midway's points in the opening frame.
The fifth-year senior from Louisville, Ky. scored 10 points to help spark an 18-5 run that saw his team take a 20-11 lead. Izaya Sims (East Moline, Ill.) and Recardo Travis (Louisville, Ky.) also contributed to the run scoring four points apiece.
The Pomeroys – who fell to 3-24 overall and 0-16 in league play with the loss – answered with a 14-4 run of their own as they took a brief 25-24 lead with 6:51 left in the first half.
Evans then scored five points, while Nick Keeton (Paintsville, Ky.) and Cory Gardner (Owensboro, Ky.) each added a layup as part of a 9-0 run that saw Midway take a 35-32 lead into the locker room.
St. Mary-of-the-Woods tied the game at 37 early in the second half, but back-to-back triples from Rico Tate (Memphis, Tenn.) and Recardo Travis capped a 9-0 run as Midway jumped to a 46-37 lead less than four minutes into the half.
An 11-2 run by the Pomeroys tied the game at 48, but Midway soon took control after holding the home team to just one field goal for over five minutes. Those five minutes saw the Eagles go on a 13-4 run to take their largest lead of the contest at 69-58 with 6:18 left in regulation.
The Pomeroys cut the deficit to three with under 30 seconds remaining, but Donovan Morris (Lexington, Ky.) went 4-for-4 in the final 24 seconds to seal the 78-71 victory.
Three players reached double figures for the Eagles led by a terrific performance by Raekwon Evans. Evans carded a game-high 30 points, while adding eight rebounds and five assists to his stat line.
Cory Gardner added 20 points and six assists, while Izaya Sims recorded 10 points and six rebounds in the win. Recardo Travis chipped in nine points and five boards, while Rico Tate dished out seven assists and grabbed five rebounds in a winning effort.
Midway is now scheduled to return to the hardwood on Thursday (Feb. 17) when they travel to Rio Grande (Ohio) to battle the RedStorm in a makeup contest. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ET at the Newt Oliver Arena.
