Box Score

OWENSBORO, Ky. -- Following a tough road loss at Rio Grande (Ohio) on Thursday, the Midway men's basketball team wrapped up their season on Saturday (Feb. 19) with a road trip to Owensboro, Ky. for a River States Conference matchup against Brescia (Ky.).

The Eagles trailed by as many as 12 in the second half before facing a 10-point deficit with just over eight minutes remaining. Midway answered to the tune of a 27-7 run as they would lead by as many as 10 down the stretch to help seal the 85-80 victory.

With the win, Joe Krupinski's squad finishes the season with a 16-10 mark overall and a 9-8 record in River States Conference play as they ultimately fall short of making the playoffs.

Helping spark the Eagles to the victory was the spectacular play of Raekwon Evans as he surpassed yet another career milestone en route to wrapping up a magnificent career.

The fifth-year senior from Louisville, Ky. entered the game 30 points shy of 2,000 points for his career. A layup with 3:09 remaining gave him his 2,000th career point as he finished with 35 points. He also grabbed 12 rebounds to card his 10th double-double of the season.

With his 35 points on Saturday, Evans brings his career total to 2,005 points becoming the first Midway men's basketball player in program history to eclipse the milestone. He hit 14-of-24 from the floor scoring 14 points in the first half before pouring in 21 in the second.

The first half saw a back-and-forth battle including seven ties as neither team led by more than five points. The Bearcats – who ended their season at 7-22 overall and 5-13 in league play with the loss – closed the half on a 10-2 run before taking a 37-33 lead at intermission.

Midway got off to a bit of a slow start to begin the second half scoring just seven points in the opening six minutes as Brescia took their largest lead of the contest at 52-40 with 14 minutes remaining.

Brescia continued to maintain a double-digit lead as they held a 66-56 lead with 8:16 left in regulation. The Eagles then made their run with a 27-7 run as they turned the 10-point deficit into a 10-point edge with under a minute remaining.

Evans sparked the run scoring 12 points including nine straight as part of a 13-0 run that officially gave the Eagles the lead for good. Recardo Travis (Louisville, Ky.) added five in the rally, while Cory Gardner (Owensboro, Ky.) nailed a trey with 44 seconds remaining as Midway came away with the 85-50 victory.

Evans wasn't the only player to reach double figures as he was joined by Recardo Travis and Izaya Sims (East Moline, Ill.). Travis carded 23 points hitting 8-of-19 from the floor, while Sims finished with 10 points and six rebounds in the win.

Rico Tate (Memphis, Tenn.) turned in yet another solid performance grabbing 10 rebounds and dishing out nine assists. As a team, Midway recorded 24 assists on their 33 made field goals.

The win marks the end of the season for the Blue and Gold as their 16 wins marks the most for a single season in program history.
