Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 | Box Score 4

MOBILE, Ala. -- After postponing their originally scheduled opening day on Friday, the Midway baseball team got their 2022 campaign underway on Saturday when they battled Cumberlands (Ky.) and Mobile (Ala.) at Jacobs Field in Mobile, Alabama.

In their opener, the Eagles battled the University of the Cumberlands who was ranked No. 11 in the NAIA Baseball Preseason Top 25 Poll. The Patriots scored three in the bottom of the second and one in the bottom of the fifth to claim the 4-3 victory.

Then, in the nightcap, the Eagles battled the host school – the Mobile Rams. Midway scored one in the top of the sixth to tie the game and force extra innings, but the Rams got a walk-off single in the bottom of the eighth en route to the 4-3 victory.

Luther Bramblett's squad will now wrap up opening weekend on Sunday (Feb. 6) when they battle Cumberlands at 12 p.m. ET and Mobile at 2:30 p.m. ET.

No. 11 Cumberlands 4, Midway 3

After neither team scored in the first, the Patriots (2-0) struck first scoring three runs on two hits in the bottom of the second to take an early 3-0 lead. Midway answered and got a run back in the top of the third cutting the deficit to 3-1.

Cameron Smith (Nicholasville, Ky.) opened the inning with a single before advancing to third three batters later. He then scored on a sacrifice fly by Ryan Davis (Paris, Ky.) cutting the Patriot lead to 3-1.

Cumberlands stretched their lead to 4-1 with a run in the bottom of the fifth, but Midway once again answered in the top of the sixth scoring two runs on one hit. Max Hill (Stockholm, Sweden) and Davis opened the inning with back-to-back walks.

Following a groundout and a pop out, Nick Eastham (Morehead, Ky.) stepped to the dish and delivered a two-run single cutting the deficit to 4-3. Unfortunately, that would be as close as the Blue and Gold got as the Patriots held on for the 4-3 victory.

Nik Malchesky (Chatsworth, Ga.) got the start and was ultimately dealt with the loss allowing four runs on five hits in his four innings of work. Cameron Head (Salem, Ky.), meanwhile, tossed two innings surrendering just two hits.

Mobile 4, Midway 3

Unlike the opener, Midway got off to a hot start and struck first scoring two in their first at bat of the game. Grant Hotchkiss (Richmond, Ky.) was hit by pitch and scored when Ryan Davis grounded out, while Max Hill was also hit before scoring when Nick Eastham grounded out.

Mobile cut the deficit in half with a run in the fourth before tacking on two more in the fifth to grab a 3-2 lead. Midway tied the game in the sixth when Cameron Nichols (Owensboro, Ky.) ripped a two-out RBI double forcing extra innings.

The Rams, however, loaded the bases in the bottom of the eighth before sealing the 4-3 victory with a walk-off single. John Davis (Princeton, Ky.) was dealt the loss for the Blue and Gold allowing one run on three walks without recording an out.

Josh Halterman (Lexington, Ky.) got the start and tossed 4.1 innings allowing two runs with five strikeouts. Spencer Lowe (Lexington, Ky.) allowed one run in 0.1 innings, while Dylan Burton (Somerset, Ky.) and Jesse Komoroski (Memphis, Tenn.) each posted scoreless outings.
