Box Score MIDWAY, Ky. -- After a busy weekend with a trip to Marietta, Ga., the Midway men's volleyball team began their final week of the regular season on Tuesday (March 22) when they hosted Thomas More (Ky.) inside Marshall Gymnasium.
Trailing two sets to one in the match, the Eagles battled back and won the fourth set to tie the match at two sets apiece and force a fifth set. Unfortunately for the home team, the Saints responded and won the fifth set for the 3-2 victory (25-22, 22-25, 26-24, 19-25, 15-9).
Following the loss, Jonea Rima's club slips to 8-15 overall and 3-14 in Mid-South Conference play, while the Saints improve to 8-16 overall and 4-11 in league play.
Thomas More won a back-and-forth opening set, but the Eagles battled back in the second set to tie the match at 1-1. They jumped to a 9-4 lead and held a 19-12 lead following a kill by Victor Bazzo (Gloria de Dourados, Brazil) as they eventually held on for the 25-22 win.
After seeing their comeback come up short in the third set, the Eagles were able to force a fifth set after winning the fourth frame. Midway held a commanding 20-13 lead, but a 5-1 run by the visitors cut the deficit to 21-18.
The Eagles, however, came out of a timeout and got a pair of kills from both Joey Boujaoude (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Bazzo to clinch the set 25-19 and force a decisive fifth frame.
The Saints broke a 5-5 tie in the fifth set with a 3-0 run and never looked back. Thomas More hit .421 in the final set en route to a 15-9 win clinching the 3-2 victory overall.
Victor Bazzo led the way for the Eagles carding a double-double with 26 kills and 11 digs. He also served a team-high three aces and posted a .255 hitting clip. Franzso Severre (St. Thomas, Virgin Islands) added 13 kills and six digs, while Joe Boujaoude chipped in eight kills.
Daniel Cogo (Padua, Italy) ran the offense and dished out 45 assists, while picking up seven digs. Colton Marsh (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Jonathan McGuyer (Sierra Vista, Ariz.) carded 10 and six digs, respectively.
The Eagles will continue their four-match homestand on Thursday when they host Georgetown (Ky.) at 6 p.m. ET inside Marshall Gymnasium.
