Box Score

MARION, N.C. -- After moving locations from Princeton, W. Va. to Marion, N.C., the Midway baseball team opened their three-game series with West Virginia Tech on Saturday (March 26) with a doubleheader at the Big League Camp.

The Eagles got terrific pitching over the twinbill as they swept the doubleheader after holding the Golden Bears to just two unearned runs over 16 innings of play. Midway got a 4-0 shutout victory in the opener before scoring one in the seventh of game two to clinch the 3-2 victory.

Following the sweep, Luther Bramblett's squad pushes their record to 10-17 overall, while they continue their perfect start in River States Conference play improving to 8-0. WVU Tech, meanwhile, drops to 5-24 overall and 3-8 in league play following the doubleheader.

The two squads are scheduled to wrap up their three-game series on Sunday with a single nine-inning game beginning at noon ET.

Game 1: Midway 4, West Virginia Tech 0

The Eagles struck first scoring a run with two hits in the opening frame. Max Hill (Stockholm, Sweden) reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second on a single by Ryan Davis (Paris, Ky.) while he came around to score on an RBI double by Cameron Nichols (Owensboro, Ky.).

Midway added to their lead in the fourth scoring two runs on two hits. Cameron Smith (Nicholasville, Ky.) had a two-out single before Nick Eastham (Morehead, Ky.) stepped in the box and crushed a two-run home run – his first of the season – pushing the lead to 3-0.

The Blue and Gold then added an insurance run in the seventh frame. Grant Hotchkiss (Richmond, Ky.) opened the inning with a single before Davis doubled putting runners at second and third with one out. Josh Halterman (Lexington, Ky.) then stepped in the box and hit a sacrifice fly to extend Midway's lead to 4-0.

The four-run advantage was more than enough for Blake Kincaid who turned in one of his best performances of the season thus far. The sophomore from Columbia, Tenn. tossed 8.1 scoreless innings allowing eight hits with five strikeouts.

Nic Malchesky (Chatsworth, Ga.) entered with runners at first and second and one out in the ninth and induced a 6-4-3 double play to end the game sealing the 4-0 shutout victory. The freshman right-hander picks up his third save of the season.

Ryan Davis led the way at the plate going 4-for-5, while Cameron Smith added a 2-for-4 outing with a run scored.

Game 2: Midway 3, West Virginia Tech 2

With the game tied at two entering their final scheduled at bat, the Midway offense came through with a run in the top of the seventh to take a 3-2 lead. Ryan Davis reached on a leadoff error before Josh Halterman walked to put runners at first and second with no outs.

Following a wild pitch, Cameron Nichols hit a groundball to second as Davis raced home. The junior slid home and beat the tag as Midway took the lead for the first time since the opening inning. The Eagles stranded runners at second and third but took the lead into the bottom half.

Josh Plasencia – who entered the game to begin the sixth frame – allowed a one-out walk but stranded the runner to clinch the 3-2 victory. The sophomore from Orlando, Fla. improves to 3-2 after pitching two shutout innings to close the game.

Plasencia entered the game in relief of Skyler Lucas who pitched well in his fifth start of the season. The sophomore from Elizabethtown, Ky. tossed five innings allowing two unearned runs on six hits with a pair of punchouts.

Midway scored first in the opening frame getting an RBI groundout from Davis as they grabbed an early 1-0 lead. West Virginia Tech took a 2-1 lead after scoring two in the bottom of the second, but the Eagles answered with a run in the top of the third.

Max Hill reached on a one-out error before later coming around to score on an RBI single by Nichols. Nichols' RBI single capped off a 2-for-4 game at the plate for the junior. Cameron Smith also added two hits in a winning effort for the Eagles.
