Midway Baseball complete three-game sweep of Rio Grande

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MIDWAY, Ky. -- Following a walk-off win on Friday to begin the three-game series, the Midway baseball team wrapped up their season opening River States Conference series with Rio Grande (Ohio) on Saturday with a twinbill at Tracy Farmer-Don Ball Stadium.

Game one of the doubleheader saw the two teams combine for 27 runs and 35 hits, while they also committed seven errors combined. The RedStorm scored one in the top of the ninth to tie the game at 13, but Midway got a walk-off balk in the bottom half to claim a wild 14-13 victory.

The nightcap didn't see near the same amount of offense as Midway scored two in the first and four in the third en route the series sweep with a 6-1 victory. The game was scheduled to go seven innings, but the game was called following the top of the fifth due to darkness.

With the win, Luther Bramblett's club has now won 5-of-6 to bring their record to 5-12 overall and 3-0 in league play. Rio Grande, meanwhile, slips to 8-14 overall and 0-3 in RSC play.

Game 1: Midway 14, Rio Grande 13

Trailing 12-10 after the top of the eighth, the Eagles jumped back in front and took a 13-12 lead after scoring three in the bottom of the eighth. Cameron Smith (Lexington, Ky.) had an RBI single to left field, while Skyler Lucas (Elizabethtown, Ky.) laced an RBI double down the right field line to tie the game at 12.

Grant Hotchkiss (Richmond, Ky.) then stepped to the dish with runners at second and third and two outs. Hotchkiss struck out but reached first on a dropped third strike throwing error by the catcher as Smith scored the go ahead run giving Midway the 13-12 lead.

Unfortunately for the Eagles, their defensive miscues came back to haunt them as the visitors scored an unearned run in the top of the ninth to tie the game at 13. Midway, however, wasn't about to let the game go to extras as they scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth.

With the bases full of Eagles and two outs, Lucas stepped to the plate with a chance to give his team their second consecutive walk-off. Lucas didn't have a chance to deliver a walk-off hit as the Rio pitcher never came set forcing the umpire to call a balk and give Midway the unique walk-off balk and clinch the series victory.

As a team, Midway compiled 18 hits as everyone in the lineup tallied at least one hit including five players that carded at least two hits apiece. Josh Halterman (Lexington, Ky.) led the way going 4-for-6 with three RBIs and a run scored, while he also started the game on the mound pitching 5.1 innings allowing seven runs – five earned – on nine hits.

Skyler Lucas went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and a run scored, and Jack Marlin (Alberta, Canada) added a three-hit day with an RBI and two runs, while Cameron Smith and Ryan Davis (Paris, Ky.) each chipped in two hits and an RBI. Casey Brown (Louisville, Ky.) and Grant Hotchkiss, meanwhile, drove in two runs and one run, respectively.

Picking up his first victory of the season in a relief effort was Jesse Komoroski (Memphis, Tenn.) who tossed one inning allowing one unearned run. John Davis (Princeton, Ky.) pitched well in his relief appearance as he didn't allow a hit in his 0.2 innings.

Game 2: Midway 6, Rio Grande 1 (5 Innings)

Following a 1-2-3 top of the first, the Eagles got their offense going in the bottom half where they scored two runs on three hits.

Max Hill (Stockholm, Sweden) singled, stole second and scored on an RBI single by Cameron Nichols (Owensboro, Ky.). Nichols then stole second before scoring on an RBI double by Nick Eastham (Morehead, Ky.) as Midway grabbed the early 2-0 lead.

After Skyler Lucas tossed a scoreless second and third frame, his offense gave him a bit more breathing room after scoring four runs on three hits in the bottom of the third.

Ryan Davis singled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Eastham, while Nichols – who reached on an error earlier in the inning – scored a wild pitch. Later in the inning, with runners at second and third, Cameron Smith ripped a two-run single up the middle to push the lead to 6-0.

Rio Grande got one back in the top of the fifth, but with daylight fading and the game now official, the game was called after the top of the fifth due to darkness.

Lucas picked up the win – his first of the season – for Midway as he tossed 4.1 innings allowing one unearned run on three hits. He also fanned four in the win. Cameron Head, meanwhile, closed the game out getting the final two outs without allowing a base hit.

UP NEXT: Midway is now scheduled to travel to Thomas More (Ky.) in Crestview Hills on Tuesday before hosting Thomas More on Wednesday at Tracy Farmer – Don Ball Stadium.
