Box Score 2 CIRCLEVILLE, Ohio -- After splitting their two mid-week matchups, the Midway baseball team returned to River States Conference play on Friday (April 22) when they opened their three-game series with Ohio Christian at Olson Field.
The Eagles trailed 3-1 following the opening four innings, but they bounced back scoring six in the fifth, three in the seventh and another in the eighth to claim the 11-4 victory.
With the win, Luther Bramblett's club improves to 16-24 overall and 12-6 in league play, while the Trailblazers slip to 9-28 overall and 2-15 in RSC play. The two are scheduled to wrap up their series with a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at noon ET.
Ohio Christian did all their scoring in the opening six frames as three of the runs scored via Midway errors. Their two runs in the second frame were each unearned, while the run in the sixth was also unearned.
Midway's offense was held in check for the first three frames, but finally got it going with a run in the top of the fourth. Cameron Smith (Nicholasville, Ky.) opened the inning with a walk before later scoring on an RBI single by Nick Eastham (Morehead, Ky.).
The Eagles then broke the game open with a six spot in the fifth. Josh Halterman (Lexington, Ky.) scored two with a double to right-center and Eastham followed with a two-run single, while Max Hill (Stockholm, Sweden) capped the big inning with a two-RBI single.
Following the unearned run in the bottom of the sixth, Midway answered with three in the seventh and another in the eighth. The seventh frame saw a two-run single by Cameron Nichols (Owensboro, Ky.) and an RBI double by Halterman, while Hill capped the scoring altogether with an RBI single in the eighth.
The run support was more than enough for the duo of Blake Kincaid (Columbia, Tenn.) and Skyler Lucas (Elizabethtown, Ky.) who held Ohio Christian to just one earned run.
Kincaid tossed six innings allowing four runs – one earned – on seven hits to improve to 5-5 on the season. The sophomore right-hander also fanned eight to bring his season total to 78 as he became Midway's single-season strikeout leader.
Lucas, meanwhile, tossed the final three frames allowing just one hit as he recorded his first save of the season.
Offensively, Max Hill, Josh Halterman and Nick Eastham led the way with three hits apiece. Hill went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and run, Halterman went 3-for-5 with three RBIs and a run, and Eastham went 3-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs. Cameron Nichols added two hits, two RBIs and two runs, and Bryant Fontanez (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) went 2-for-3 with three runs, while Grant Hotchkiss (Richmond, Ky.) also added two hits in the win.
