Midway Baseball finishes in third at River States Conference Tournament

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CHILLICOTHE, Ohio -- Following a tough loss to Point Park (Pa.) the night before, the Midway baseball team had a quick turnaround on Sunday (May 8) for day three of the River States Conference Tournament at VA Memorial Stadium.

After getting sent to the consolation bracket, the Eagles matched up with Oakland City (Ind.) in an elimination game. With the game tied at eight heading into the eighth inning, the Eagles scored two in the bottom of the eighth and held on for the 10-9 victory.

With the win, Luther Bramblett's team once again faced elimination later that night in another elimination game against Point Park. The Eagles went toe-to-toe with the No. 2 seed and trailed 4-3 following the top of the eighth, but eventually fell short by a final score of 13-3.

The loss to the Pioneers unfortunately meant that the 2022 campaign had come to an end for the Eagles. They finished the season with a 19-31 mark, while they were among the final three teams remaining in the RSC Tournament.

Game 1: Midway 10, Oakland City 9

In a matchup that saw the two teams combine for 19 runs and 22 hits, the Eagles scored in double figures for the second time in three games at the tournament. With the game tied at eight, the Eagles broke the tie scoring two runs on two hits in the bottom of the eighth.

Cameron Nichols (Owensboro, Ky.) singled and Cameron Smith (Nicholasville, Ky.) walked to put runners at first and second with one out. Casey Brown (Louisville, Ky.) then stepped in the box and looped a double to right-center scoring Nichols and Smith as Midway took a 10-8 lead. His two-run double capped off a 3-for-4 performance with three RBIs.

The Mighty Oaks cut the deficit in half with a solo home run to lead off the top of the ninth, but the Eagles sent the next three batters down in order sealing the 10-9 victory.

Skyler Lucas (Elizabethtown, Ky.) picked up the win in relief for his fourth victory of the year. He allowed one run on one hit in his 2.1 innings of work. Jesse Komoroski (Memphis, Tenn.) entered with one out in the top of the ninth to collect his second save of the season.

Nichols added two hits, three RBIs and two runs, while Smith drove in three with his 2-for-4 performance. Grant Hotchkiss (Richmond, Ky.) and Max Hill (Stockholm, Sweden), meanwhile, scored three and two runs, respectively.

Game 2: Point Park 13, Midway 3

Getting the starting nod for the Eagles in their second elimination contest of the day was Blake Kincaid. Just three days prior, the sophomore from Columbia, Tenn., started Midway's tournament opener against IU Kokomo (Ind.).

The right hander allowed a four spot in the opening frame, but from that point on, he was lights out, tossing six consecutive scoreless frames. His offense, meanwhile, finally broke thru scoring one in the fourth and two in the eight cutting the deficit to 4-3.

Casey Brown had an RBI single in the fourth, while Josh Halterman opened the eighth inning with an RBI double cutting the deficit to 4-2. Halterman's pinch runner, Kobie Nauert (Louisville, Ky.) then scored on an RBI double by Brown.

Unfortunately for the Eagles, the Pioneers extended their lead scoring nine runs on eight hits in the bottom of the eighth as they went on for the 13-3 victory.

Kincaid was dealt the loss for the Eagles as he allowed six runs on 11 hits in his seven innings of work on the bump. He also struck out seven batters bringing his total to 90 on the season.
