CHILLICOTHE, Ohio -- After having to postpone day two of the River States Conference Tournament, the Midway baseball team returned to VA Memorial Stadium on Saturday night when they battled Point Park (Pa.).
In a matchup featuring two of the remaining three unbeaten teams left in the tournament, the Pioneers scored early and often pushing across seven runs in the opening four innings as they would cruise to the 11-5 victory.
With the loss, Luther Bramblett's squad falls to 18-30 on the season, while they now drop to the consolation bracket where they will face elimination on Sunday. The Eagles will battle Oakland City (Ind.) at 3 p.m. ET on Sunday in a win-or-go-home contest.
The Mighty Oaks lost their tournament opener to Point Park on the opening day of the tournament on Thursday, but advanced to Sunday after picking up a 6-1 victory over Rio Grande (Ohio) in the first game of the day on Saturday.
As for Saturday's matchup against Point Park, the Eagles had no problem keeping up with the Pioneers in the hit-column, but they just couldn't get the big hit when they needed it the most.
The Pioneers pushed an unearned run across in the bottom of the first, but Midway quickly answered in the top of the second with an RBI single by Bryant Fontanez (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) knotting the game up at one run apiece.
Point Park once again regained the lead with a run in the bottom of the third, but the Eagles responded with two runs on three hits. Cameron Nichols (Owensboro, Ky.) singled and scored on an RBI double by Josh Halterman (Lexington, Ky.), while Halterman came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Casey Brown (Louisville, Ky.).
Unfortunately for the Blue and Gold, Point Park answered with five runs in the bottom half of the fourth and another run in the seventh as they took an 8-3 lead into the eighth.
Midway scored a pair in the eighth getting an RBI double by Nichols and an RBI ground out by Halterman. The two runs cut the deficit to 8-5, but Point Park scored three insurance runs in the top of the eighth to clinch the 11-5 victory.
Josh Plasencia (Orlando, Fla.) was dealt the loss allowing six runs – five earned – on five hits in his three innings of work. Cameron Head (Salem, Ky.) allowed on run in his one inning, while Ryan Lee Hayes (Lebanon, Ky.) allowed just one run in 2.1 innings on the bump.
The big difference in the contest was the number of free passes allowed by the two teams. The Eagles allowed nine walks to the Pioneers, while Point Park didn't walk one batter in the win.
Max Hill (Stockholm, Sweden) led the offensive attack going 3-for-4, while Cameron Nichols, Josh Halterman, and Cameron Smith (Nicholasville, Ky.) each recorded two hits in the loss.
