Midway Men's Basketball erases 19-point deficit in dramatic overtime win over Asbury

Box Score

MIDWAY, Ky. -- The Midway men's basketball team stepped out of River States Conference play for the final time in the 2022-23 season on Wednesday evening when they welcomed Asbury (Ky.) to Marshall Gymnasium.

Midway trailed by as many as 19 in the first half, but rallied to force overtime before outscoring Asbury 19-10 in the extra period en route to the 87-78 come-from-behind victory.

With the win Midway improves to 11-7 overall while Asbury falls to 13-5 for the season.

It was a less than ideal start for the Blue and Gold as they faced a 37-18 deficit with just over seven minutes remaining in the opening half. The Eagles finally found their footing late in the opening stanza after using a 14-2 run to cut the Asbury lead to 39-32 at halftime.

Donnie Miller (Newport, Ky.) kickstarted the run with a triple before Ridge Hall (New Pekin, Ind.) added a layup of his own. Dae'Shawn White (Newport, Ky.) then caught fire hitting three straight three-pointers including one as the halftime buzzer sounded.

After Asbury pushed their lead back to nine in the opening moments of the second half, the Eagles used an 8-0 run to get within one point. Tobias Thompson (Louisville, Ky.) later tied the game at 46 following back-to-back layups.

Facing a 58-49 deficit, Miller quickly got the Eagles back within five following back-to-back steals and subsequent dunks with 5:43 remaining. Asbury later stretched their lead back to seven, 64-57, with less than four minutes remaining on the clock.

A triple by Miller and a pair of free throws by the junior followed by a layup by Thompson tied the game at 64 with under a minute remaining. Asbury's Nick Fort immediately answered draining home a deep triple to give his team a 67-64 lead with 40 seconds remaining.

Miller quickly raced down floor and hit a layup to get his team within one, 67-66, with 25 seconds left. After Caleb Wallis hit 1-of-2 at the charity stripe, Joe Krupinski called a timeout and drew up a play looking to force overtime.

Krupinski's team did just that as Miller got a step on his man and hit a game-tying layup with 9.5 seconds left. Asbury raced down the floor, but their two chances were off the mark as the game headed to overtime tied at 68.

Midway came out firing in the extra period hitting 4-of-5 from the floor and 11-of-14 from the charity stripe. They opened overtime on a 12-0 run and wouldn't look back as they hung on for the 87-78 victory.

Donnie Miller took over in overtime scoring 13 of his career-high 39 points. The junior guard played all 45 minutes and hit 11-of-22 from the floor and 15-of-16 from the free throw line.

Tobias Thompson turned in one his best performances of the season with 18 points, four rebounds, and four blocks, while Nick Keeton (Paintsville, Ky.) added 14 points and six boards. Dae'Shawn White also reached double figures with 11 points and seven rebounds. Will VanHook (West Palm Beach, Fla.), meanwhile, carded 10 assists and six rebounds in the win.

The Eagles are scheduled to return to the hardwood on Saturday (Jan. 21) when they battle IU Southeast (Ind.) in a River States Conference matchup. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m. ET.
