Box Score MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Down a point with just 0.3 seconds remaining, it was going to take a perfect play for Brewton-Parker (Ga.) to steal a win from Midway in a women's basketball tilt Saturday.
Sadly for the Eagles, the Barons were up to the task.
Inbounder A'Aliyah Clay lobbed an on-the-money pass to a cutting Angel McRae, who leapt, caught the ball and in one motion, laid it in in front of two Midway defenders, lifting Brewton to a stunning 71-70 win on the second day of the Faulkner Classic in Montgomery, Ala. Saturday.
Just moments earlier, it was the Eagles who appeared to be primed for a miracle win. Down two with seven seconds left, Jaiden Douthit made a great read to make a steal on the defensive end, then dribbled all the way down into the paint before kicking out to Bree Howard behind the 3-point line.
After a pump fake got her free, Howard launced a triple that hit nothing but net. Her shot put Midway ahead 70-69 with only .03 seconds remaining, leaving only a miracle finish standing between the Eagles and a win over a Barons team that made the national tournament a season ago and received votes in the preseason NAIA national poll.
It was a highlight moment on an excellent day for Howard, who had seven points in 23 minutes, after scoring just one point in 19 minutes combined in the Eagles' first two games.
Sereniti Webb put together her best game of the young season, leading all players with 22 points and nine rebounds. Kassidy Daugherty also finished in double figures with 11, while Atlantis White and Trinity Johnson both scored eight off the bench. Douthit tied for the game high with three assists.
The loss drops the Eagles to 0-3 on the season. They'll look to recover when they return home Wednesday to take on Taylor (Ind.) at 6 p.m. inside Marshall Gymnasium.
