Box Score MIDWAY, Ky. - Despite a seemingly unstoppable low-post performance by Sereniti Webb, turnovers and inconsistency on both ends were too much for Midway to overcome, as St. Mary of the Woods (Ind.) scrapped its way to an 83-73 win in River States Conference women's basketball play Friday.
The Pomeroys struggled to contain Webb all game, as the sophomore from Covington, Ky. set new career highs with 32 points and 13 rebounds. She did this while shooting 14-of-17 from the field and 4-of-4 from the foul line, and her percentages likely would have been higher if not for a pair of blocks by Pomeroy center Allyson Hardiek in the fourth quarter.
Despite Webb's excellence, Saint Mary of the Woods never trailed and got an excellent offensive outing of its own in a 26-point, nine-rebound effort by Brooklynn Jones.
After a Kassidy Daugherty 3-pointer got Midway within 27-24 in the second quarter, the Pomeroys answered with a 12-0 run and kept Midway at arm's length for much of the game, even holding a 68-55 lead a minute into the fourth quarter.
The Eagles were able to make things interesting. Daugherty scored 11 of her 19 points in the fourth quarter and her third 3-pointer of the period cut the deficit all the way down to 71-66 with 4:27 remaining.
But the Eagles would get no closer, as timely stops and free throws down the stretch earned the Pomeroys their first win over the Eagles in 10 tries while stretching their RSC record to 3-0.
Entering the night with just seven total points in her freshman year, Jenna Phelps had a breakout game of her own with 10 points and two steals while having a perfect night shooting from the field (3-for-3) and the foul line (4-for-4).
Unfortunately, the rest of the offense failed to match the balance of the Pomeroys, who had 10 players score to Midway's five. SMWC also had a huge advantage at the foul line, making 27-of-38 while the Eagles were just 8-of-14.
After winning back-to-back league games coming in, the Eagles fall back to .500 in the RSC at 2-2 and are 4-8 overall. They have two non-conference home games to close out 2023, the first of which will be a 1 p.m. matchup with Huntington (Ind.) on Tuesday.
