Box Score MIDWAY, Ky. - Kylee Gorby knew she wouldn't be able to breath easy until she could see a basketball land outside the basket.
Though it was a very low-percentage shot, Gorby, whose Midway women's basketball team has already lost two games at the buzzer this season, said her anxiety was "sky high" when Molly Long of Grace (Ind.) launched a three-quarter court shot just before time expired as the Eagles clung to an 80-79 lead.
But luckily for the Eagles, who had their own 3-point buzzer beater waved off at the end of the first half, they wouldn't be experiencing such heartbreak this time, as Long's shot fell well short of the basket, allowing Midway to escape with the one-point win Saturday.
The heave came at the close of a wild final minute in which the lead changed hands four times.
The Lancers hadn't led since the first quarter and trailed by as much as 14 in the fourth, but stayed alive behind a swarming defense that scored seven points off of forced seven turnovers in the final 10 minutes. And with one minute to play, a Peyton Murphy steal led to a Maddie Ryman triple that gave Grace a 76-75 lead.
Ryman, who scored 31 points in a 95-78 win over Midway last Dec. 31, had 22 Saturday.
Midway's Sereniti Webb and Kaylee Patton then traded 3-point plays before Eagle guard Jermyra Christian was able to draw a foul with 10 seconds remaining. She then calmly stepped to the line and hit two free throws to give Midway the lead back.
Patton attempted to play the hero but was unable to convert a contested look. Webb then grabbed a rebound and was fouled with two seconds to play, and though she missed two free throws on the other end, Grace had no time to get a good look at a winning shot.
It was another sterling effort by Webb, who led all players with 23 points and seven rebounds. Over her last three games, the Covington, Ky. native is averaging 23.6 points and 12.6 rebounds.
Jaiden Douthit (13), Kassidy Daugherty (12) and Lauren Walton (11) all scored in double-figures for the 6-8 Eagles, who used an 11-0 run to open up a 66-52 lead with 8:09 to play. It was the first double-digit scoring game in an Eagle uniform from Walton, as she and Daugherty combined to go 7-of-14 from 3-point range.
Saturday marked the final non-conference game of the season for the Eagles. Before turning its full attention to River States Conference play, Midway will make a short trip to Frankfort to face NCAA Division-II Kentucky State in an exhibition matchup at 2 p.m. Tuesday.
The Eagles host Shawnee State next Thursday and Shawnee State next Saturday.
