RedStorm outduels Eagles in MSC matchup

Box Score

MIDWAY, Ky. -- The Midway men's volleyball team returned to action on Friday night when they wrapped up a three-match homestand by welcoming Rio Grande (Ohio) to Marshall Gymnasium for a Mid-South Conference matchup.

The Eagles struggled to slow down the Rio offensive attack as the visitors departed the Bluegrass State after handing the home team a 3-0 defeat (25-22, 27-25, 28-26).

Following the loss, the Eagles drop to 3-3 overall and 0-2 in MSC play, while the RedStorm improved to 3-7 overall and 1-0 in league play with the win.

Rio Grande got off to a strong start posting a .438 hitting mark in the opening set. The set saw a back-and-forth battle until the RedStorm went on a 3-0 run to take a 24-20 lead. Midway cut the lead in half, but Rio held on for the 25-22 opening set victory.

The RedStorm held a comfortable 21-14 lead and seemed to be in control, that was until the Eagles answered with a 7-0 run to tie the set at 21. The Eagles unfortunately never got the lead as Rio took a commanding 2-0 lead after winning the second set 27-25.

The Blue and Gold were forced to come from behind once again in the third set after the RedStorm sprinted to an early 10-4 lead. Midway responded with an 8-2 run to tie the set at 12, but the two squads eventually played to a 23-all tie.

The Eagles would hold set points at 24-23, 25-24, and 26-25, but they failed to close the door allowing the RedStorm to close the set on a 3-0 run to complete the 3-0 sweep.

Victor Bazzo (Gloria de Dourados, Brazil) led the way with 15 kills and seven digs, while Jai'Den Chinnis (Upland, Calif.) notched 10 kills in the loss. Jonathan McGuyer (Sierra Vista, Ariz.) carded 10 digs to with his seven kills and a .357 hitting clip.

Daniel Cogo (Padua, Italy) ran the offense and dished out 33 assists, while Colton Marsh (Cincinnati, Ohio) led the defensive effort with 12 digs.

The Eagles are set to return to action on Tuesday (Feb. 14) when they begin a four-match road swing with a trip to Thomas More (Ky.). First serve is set for 6 p.m. ET in Crestview Hills.
