IU Southeast spoils Senior Night for Midway Men's Basketball

Box Score

MIDWAY, Ky. -- Following a few days off since picking up a win over St. Mary-of-the-Woods (Ind.), the Midway men's basketball team returned to the hardwood on Thursday night when they hosted IU Southeast (Ind.) for Senior Night inside Marshall Gymnasium.

It was a tough night for the Blue and Gold as they struggled to stop the Grenadier offensive attack. The visitors shot nearly 60 percent as they would take a 12-point lead at halftime before cruising to the 87-69 victory.

With the loss, Joe Krupinski's squad falls to 16-10 overall and 11-6 in River States Conference play, while the Grenadiers improve to 19-8 overall and 14-4 in league play with the win.

Senior Ridge Hall (New Pekin, Ind.) opened the game with a long jumper giving his team its first lead of the contest, but unfortunately for the Eagles, they found themselves battling from behind the rest of the game.

Donnie Miller (Newport, Ky.) later hit a pair at the free throw line to tie the game at 12, but IU Southeast immediately answered with a 14-0 run as they built a 26-12 lead with just under 10 minutes left in the half.

After torching the nets and shooting 61.3 percent from the floor in the first half, the Grenadiers would take a 47-35 lead into the locker room. Midway, meanwhile, struggled offensively shooting just 38.2 percent from the field.

A triple by Miller got the Eagles back within single digits before they made a run to get within four. Nick Keeton (Paintsville, Ky.) kickstarted a 6-0 run with a layup before back-to-back buckets by Rico Tate (Memphis, Tenn.) and Miller cut the lead to 56-52 with 13:01 left.

A couple of plays later, TJ O'Connor (Miami, Fla.) connected on a long triple that got the Eagles within three, 58-55, heading into the under 12 media timeout. After IU Southeast pushed the lead back to nine, O'Connor connected on another triple to get his team within six.

Unfortunately for the Eagles, that would be as close as they would get down the stretch. IU Southeast held the Eagles without a field goal for the final five plus minutes as they would eventually cruise to the 87-69 victory.

Midway had four players reach double figures in the loss led by Donnie Miller who finished with 23 points and team-high four steals. Rico Tate and Nick Keeton each scored 11 points and grabbed eight and seven rebounds, respectively.

For the game, IU Southeast shot a scorching 57.6 percent from the floor and 61.5 percent from behind the arc. Midway shot just 41.4 percent from the floor for the game.

The Eagles will now hit the road for their final contest of the regular season on Saturday (Feb. 18) when they take on IU East (Ind.) at 3 p.m. ET.
