Box Score FRANKFORT, Ky. -- After a week away from competition, the Midway men's volleyball team returned to the courts when it made the short trip to Frankfort, Kentucky for a non-conference matchup with Kentucky State.
After winning a tight opening two sets, the Eagles pulled away in the third and swept the Thorobreds 3-0 (26-24, 25-21, 25-12).
With the win, Jonea Rima's squad improves to 4-3 on the season while Kentucky State falls to 1-12.
In set one, Midway embarked on a 5-0 run to take a 17-11 lead, but Kentucky State clawed its way back to tie things and even took a 24-23 advantage. Midway battled back and claimed the first set 26-24 after the defense forced a pair of attacking errors.
In the second set, the host Thorobreds came out of the gates quickly, staking claim to a 15-9 lead. This time, it was the Eagles who staged the comeback and thanks to back-to-back aces from Jonathan McGuyer (Sierra Vista, Ariz.) and consecutive kills from Joey Boujaoude (Cincinnati, Ohio), the visitors took a 22-19 lead before closing out the set 25-21.
The Blue and Gold opened the third set on a 10-3 run to build a commanding lead and closed out the match with a 25-10 victory.
Offensively, Midway was led by Boujaoude who registered 16 kills and posted an impressive .480 kill percentage. Victor Bazzo (Gloria de Dourados, Brazil) also posted 10 kills while Daniel Cogo (Padua, Italy) dished out 36 assists.
On the defensive end, McGuyer led the team with nine digs while Colton Marsh (Cincinnati, Ohio) chipped in with seven. The Blue and Gold were led in serving by Bazzo and McGuyer who each recorded two aces.
Midway men's volleyball will return to action on Tuesday, February 21 when it travels to West Terre Haute, Indiana for a non-conference battle with St. Mary-of-the-Woods (Ind.). Opening serve against the Pomeroy's is scheduled for 6 p.m. ET.
