Box Score MIDWAY, Ky. -- After opening the season last weekend in Alabama, the Midway baseball team returned home on Saturday when they welcomed Indiana Tech to Tracy Farmer – Don Ball Stadium for the 2023 home opener.
A four-run sixth inning gave Midway a 9-8 lead, but the Warriors tied the game in the eighth before using a two-run home run in the tenth to steal the series opener by a final of 11-10.
With the loss, Luther Bramblett's squad falls to 0-5 on the year, while Indiana Tech improves to 1-0 following the victory.
Indiana Tech – who finished with 14 hits in the win – scored one in the first, two in the second, and three in the fourth to take a 6-2 lead into the bottom of the fourth. Midway answered and pulled within one-run after scoring one in the fourth and two more in the fifth.
Barrett McGill (Bloomfield, Ky.) accounted for the run in the fourth with a solo home run to lead off the inning. The fifth frame saw Ryan Davis (Paris, Ky.) record a sacrifice fly, while Ayden Sciandra (Jacksonville, Fla.) scored when Cameron Nichols (Owensboro, Ky.) reached on an error.
Indiana Tech added to their lead with a pair in the top of the sixth, but Midway answered by scoring four runs on two hits, and two errors in the bottom of the sixth.
Shane Taylor (Morehead, Ky.) scored when Noah Phillips (Greenville, Ky.) reached on an error, while Phillips later scored on an error. Prior to Phillips scoring the tying run, Grant Hotchkiss (Richmond, Ky.) laced an RBI single through the right side.
Hotchkiss later scored when Davis reached on a fielder's choice as Midway took their first lead of the contest, 9-8, after six innings of play.
The Warriors forced extra innings after tying the game in the eighth before Parker Bates hit a two-run home run in the 10th that gave his team an 11-9 lead. An RBI groundout by Phillips cut the deficit in half, but Midway came up short after leaving the tying run 90 feet away.
Ryan Lee Hayes (Lebanon, Ky.) was dealt the loss after allowing two runs in his one inning of work on the bump. Jessee Komoroski (Memphis, Tenn.) and Cameron Head (Salem, Ky.), meanwhile, each added a scoreless outing out of the bullpen.
Grant Hotchkiss led the way at the plate going 3-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs, while Ayden Sciandra went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and two runs.
The Eagles and the Warriors are scheduled to wrap up their three-game series on Sunday with a doubleheader beginning at noon ET at Tracy Farmer – Don Ball Stadium.
