Box Score MIDWAY, Ky. -- Nearly one year to the day since clinching their first NAIA National Tournament appearance in program history, the Midway women's basketball team is headed back to the big dance following their semifinal victory over Alice Lloyd (Ky.) on Saturday (Feb. 25).
Midway – who trailed by as many as four in the first half – would face a one-point deficit at intermission before storming back in the second half. They would go on to outscore the visitors 46-29 in the second half and cruise to the 76-60 victory inside Marshall Gymnasium.
With the win, Chris Minner's squad not only runs their winning streak to 12, improving to 23-7 on the season, but they've also punched their ticket to the River States Conference Tournament Championship for the second straight season.
In the championship matchup, Midway will battle No. 12 Rio Grande (Ohio) on Tuesday (Feb. 28) at 7 p.m. ET. The RedStorm – who won the regular season crown and the RSC East Division – punched their championship ticket with an 87-77 win over Oakland City (Ind.).
With Rio Grande winning their semifinal and advancing to the championship game, the Eagles have earned the RSC's second automatic berth to the NAIA Women's Basketball National Championship Opening Round for the second time in program history.
In a first quarter that saw the lead change hands three times, Midway forced Alice Lloyd into seven turnovers before taking a 16-15 lead into the second stanza. A triple from Hannah Kash gave the visitors their largest lead of the game, 22-18, at the 5:48 mark of the first half.
A Kassidy Daugherty (Owensboro, Ky.) triple followed by back-to-back layups by Jalyn Jackson (Cold Spring, Ky.) fueled an 8-2 run that saw Midway take a 26-24 lead. Alice Lloyd, however, scored the final four points of the first half as they took a 31-30 lead at intermission.
The third quarter saw Midway's offense start to get into rhythm thanks in large part to Sereniti Webb (Covington, Ky.). Webb opened the second half on a personal 7-0 run before Dezeree White (Houston, Texas) capped the 9-0 run with a short jumper giving Midway a 39-31 lead.
Midway held a consistent lead throughout the quarter before pushing their lead to double figures late in the third. Webb, who scored 11 points and grabbed four rebounds in the quarter, pushed the lead to double figures as Midway would take a 57-47 lead into the final stanza.
Webb would continue her dominant second half in the fourth quarter as Alice Lloyd had no answer for the freshman. She scored nine points in the fourth and Dezeree White added eight as Midway hit 9-of-12 from the charity stripe en route to the 76-60 victory.
Webb, a true freshman playing in just her second career playoff game, came up big when her team needed it the most. She scored a career-high 22 points in the win including 20 in the second half. She also grabbed eight boards, blocked four shots, and hit 8-of-10 from the floor.
Joining her in double figures was Dezeree White who finished with 21 points, nine rebounds, and six assists. Jalyn Jackson, meanwhile, played 27 minutes off the bench and scored 14 points hitting 4-of-6 from the floor and 2-of-4 from behind the arc.
Midway forced the visitors into 23 turnovers which led to a 19-5 advantage in points off turnovers. The Blue and Gold also grabbed 14 offensive rebounds as they held an 11-3 edge in second chance points.
Tipoff for Tuesday's championship is set for 7 p.m. ET inside the Newt Oliver Arena in Rio Grande, Ohio.
