Men's Volleyball battles No. 6 Georgetown in MSC opener

MIDWAY, Ky. -- The Midway men's volleyball team continued their three-match homestand on Tuesday night when they welcomed No. 6 Georgetown (Ky.) to Marshall Gymnasium for their Mid-South Conference opener.

Georgetown held the home team to a negative hitting percentage as they would cruise to the easy 3-0 victory (25-16, 25-12, 28-26).

With the loss, the Eagles fall to 3-2 overall and 0-1 in MSC action, while the Tigers improve to 7-1 overall and 1-0 in league play following the win.

Midway was held to a -.012 hitting percentage, while the Tigers notched a .256 attacking clip with 36 kills in their 82 swings. Georgetown dominated the net defensively with 18 total blocks.

The visitors recorded a .333 hitting mark in the first set and a .273 attacking clip in the second as they took a commanding 2-0 lead after winning the two sets 25-16 and 25-12, respectively.

The third set saw a back-and-forth battle with neither team leading by more than four. Midway trailed 16-14, but an ace by Victor Bazzo (Gloria de Dourados, Brazil) and a kill by Jai'Den Chinnis (Upland, Calif.) sparked a 4-1 run as Midway took an 18-17 advantage.

The lead wouldn't last long as Georgetown seemed to seize control holding a 23-19 lead. A flurry of errors by the Tigers and an ace by Jonathan McGuyer (Sierra Vista, Ariz.) led to five unanswered points as Midway had set point with a 24-23 lead.

Georgetown would fight off two set points before closing the set on a 3-0 run to clinch the sweep with the 28-26 third set victory.

Joey Boujaoude (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Victor Bazzo led the offensive attack for the Eagles with seven kills apiece. Boujaoude added a .375 hitting mark, while Bazzo served a match-high three aces.

Daniel Cogo (Padua, Italy) dished out 19 assists, while Colton Marsh (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Jonathan McGuyer led the defensive effort with 11 and eight digs, respectively.

The Eagles are set to wrap up their homestand on Friday (Feb. 10) when they host Rio Grande (Ohio) in another MSC match. First serve is set for 7 p.m. ET inside Marshall Gymnasium.
