Box Score MIDWAY, Ky. -- Following a week away from competition, the Midway men's volleyball team returned to action on Tuesday night when they welcomed Campbellsville (Ky.) to Marshall Gymnasium for a Mid-South Conference match.
The Eagles held a lead throughout each of the three sets, but it was the visiting Tigers that made the plays down the stretch as they came away with a hard fought 3-0 victory (25-23, 32-30, 25-23).
Following the loss, Midway falls to 6-9 overall and 0-7 in MSC play, while Campbellsville improves to 7-13 overall and 3-3 in league play with the win.
It was a fairly even match all the way around with Campbellsville holding a slim 41-38 edge in total kills. The Eagles were a bit more efficient posting a .244 hitting mark compared to a .224 attacking percentage by the Tigers.
The first set saw Midway face an 18-14 deficit, but they slowly chipped away before taking a 21-19 advantage on the heels of a 7-1 run. A kill by Victor Bazzo (Gloria de Dorados, Brazil) tied the set at 23, but the Tigers scored the final two points to clinch a 25-23 opening set victory.
The Eagles got off to a terrific start in the second stanza thanks to Joey Boujaoude (Cincinnati, Ohio) who put down a kill and served an ace to give his team a 12-7 edge. Back-to-back kills by Bazzo gave Midway set point and forced the visitors to call a quick timeout.
The Blue and Gold would hold four more set points down the stretch, but they were unable to close the door as Campbellsville took a 2-0 lead after winning the set 32-30.
The home squad trailed by as many as four early in the third and would later face a 20-17 deficit before taking a 23-21 lead. Back-to-back kills by Bazzo and Boujaoude sparked a 6-1 run that forced the Tigers to call a timeout after seeing Midway take a two-point lead.
Unfortunately for the Eagles, they wouldn't score again as Campbellsville closed the set on a 4-0 run to clinch the sweep following a 25-23 win in the final frame.
Bazzo led the offensive attack with a match-high 21 kills. He committed just seven errors in his 51 swings to card a .314 hitting percentage. The senior also collected eight digs, while Boujaoude finished with seven kills in the loss.
Daniel Cogo (Padua, Italy) dished out 29 assists, while Colton Marsh (Cincinnati, Ohio) led the defensive effort with a match-high 11 digs.
Midway is scheduled to wrap up the home portion of their schedule on Thursday when they host Thomas More (Ky.). First serve is set for 7 p.m. ET inside Marshall Gymnasium.
