Records fall as Midway Baseball completes series sweep of Brescia

Box Score

OWENSBORO, Ky. -- After combining to score 23 runs on 23 hits in Thursday's doubleheader, the Midway baseball team continued its potent offensive attack as they peppered the Brescia (Ky.) Bearcats in their series finale on Friday (March 17) in Owensboro.

The Eagles scored early and often as they managed to complete the series sweep of the Bearcats with a dominate 23-3 victory.

With the win, Luther Bramblett's squad – which has won nine of their last 11 – improves to 13-10 overall and 7-2 in River States Conference play. Brescia, meanwhile, falls to 8-17-1 overall and 3-6 in league play following the loss.

Not only did the Eagles cruise to the easy win, but they also managed to re-write the record books in the process. They set new single-game program records for total runs (23), total hits (21), and hits in a single inning (9).

Midway got off to a terrific start scoring six runs in the opening inning. Josh Halterman (Lexington, Ky.) picked up an RBI after reaching on an error, while Shane Taylor (Morehead, Ky.) drove in a pair with a two-run single. One other run scored on a wild pitch, while the final two scored when Noah Phillips (Greenville, Ky.) reached on an error that would've ended the inning.

They pushed their lead to double digits after tacking on four more in the second. Barrett McGill (Bloomfield, Ky.) and Eli Glasscock (Danville, Ky.) each drove in one run apiece, while the remaining two runs scored on respective errors.

Ayden Sciandra (Jacksonville, Fla.) added an RBI double in the fourth making the lead 11-0, while Midway scored 10 runs on nine hits in the fifth breaking the record for hits in a single inning.

The inning saw Ryan Davis (Paris, Ky.) single and score on a passed ball, while Taylor, Glasscock, Sciandra, and Phillips reached base safely in four consecutive at-bats that produced one run apiece.

Grant Hotchkiss (Richmond, Ky.) added a sacrifice fly and Preston Howard (Nicholasville, Ky.) recorded a two-run single, while Cameron Nichols (Owensboro, Ky.) and McGill added an RBI single and an RBI double, respectively, to cap the 10-run fifth.

The final two runs came in the sixth inning when Howard hit a two-run single as Midway cruised to the 23-3 victory. Howard was one of seven Eagles to notch at least two hits in the win as he went 2-for-2 with four RBIs and run scored.

Shane Taylor went 4-for-5 with three RBIs and three runs, Cameron Nichols also went 4-for-5 with an RBI and three runs, and Barrett McGill went 3-for-6 with two RBIs. Ayden Sciandra added two hits, two RBIs, and two runs, while Josh Halterman and Grant Hotchkiss each recorded two hits apiece in the win.

On the bump, Owen Clark (Knoxville, Tenn.) picked up the win moving to 3-1 on the year. The left-hander allowed two runs – one earned – on four hits in his five innings. He also fanned seven of the 22 batters he faced.

Cameron Head (Salem, Ky.) tossed a perfect sixth inning with two strikeouts, while Skyler Lucas (Elizabethtown, Ky.) allowed one run on two hits with three strikeouts in the seventh.

The Eagles will now enjoy a couple of days off before returning to action on Tuesday when they travel to Pikeville (Ky.) for a midweek matchup.
