Box Score PIKEVILLE, Ky. -- After a weekend sweep over Brescia (Ky.), the Midway baseball team hit the road on Tuesday for a non-conference matchup against Pikeville (Ky.).
The Eagles recorded six more hits than the home team, but they committed four errors which led to six unearned runs as the Bears held on for the 11-10 victory.
With the loss, the Eagles fall to 13-11 on the season, while the Bears improve to 11-15.
The Bears jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first before the Eagles plated a run in the top of the third. Pikeville answered back with a run of their own in the bottom half to claim a 4-1 lead.
In the top of the fourth, Noah Phillips (Greenville, Ky.) homered to left center to cut the Pikeville advantage to two. Following a Grant Hotchkiss (Richmond, Ky.) single, Ryan Davis (Paris, Ky.) homered to right field to tie the game at four.
Pikeville scored five runs in the bottom of the fourth and added a pair of insurance tallies in the bottom of the fifth that would prove important. Midway cut the deficit to just two runs after scoring two in the sixth and three in the eighth.
Nick Eastham (Morehead, Ky.) ripped a two-run double to left-center in the sixth, while the trio of Jonathan Watson (Williamsburg, Ky.), Shane Taylor (Morehead, Ky.), and Ayden Sciandra (Jacksonville, Ky.) each hit an RBI single in the eighth to cut the deficit to 11-9.
Midway had runners on first and third with no outs in the ninth, but they managed to score just one run as Pikeville held on for the 11-10 victory.
Josh Plasencia (Orlando, Fla.) was dealt the loss allowing five runs – two earned – on two hits in his one inning of work. Tyler Pyles (Louisville, Ky.) got the start, allowing four runs – two earned – on five hits with four strikeouts in his 2.2 innings of work on the bump.
Gus Garrison (Cynthiana, Ky.) allowed one earned run in his 1.1 innings, while Cameron Head (Salem, Ky.), John Davis (Princeton, Ky.), and Jesse Komoroski (Memphis, Tenn.) each tossed one scoreless inning in the loss.
Offensively, Ryan Davis and Shane Taylor led the way with three hits apiece, while Cameron Nichols (Owensboro, Ky.), Grant Hotchkiss, and Ayden Sciandra each tallied two hits apiece.
The Eagles are scheduled to return to action on Thursday, March 23, when they travel to Rio Grande (Ohio) for a River States Conference doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m. ET.
