Box Score 2 RIO GRANDE, Ohio -- The Midway baseball team continued their eight-game road swing on Thursday afternoon when they returned to River States Conference play with a doubleheader against the Rio Grande (Ohio) RedStorm at Bob Evans Field in Rio Grande, Ohio.
The opener saw the RedStorm score five unanswered runs in the seventh and eighth innings en route to the 7-5 victory, but the Eagles bounced back in the nightcap getting a terrific pitching performance from southpaw Owen Clark to claim the 6-1 victory and secure the split.
Following Thursday's twinbill, Luther Bramblett's squad moves to 14-12 overall and 8-3 in RSC play, while Rio Grande goes to 11-18 and 4-7 in league play. The two are scheduled to wrap up their three-game series on Sunday with a single game starting at 2 p.m. ET at Bob Evans Field.
Game 1: Rio Grande 7, Midway 5
The Eagles jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the opening frame thanks to an RBI single by Barrett McGill (Bloomfield, Ky.). The lead grew to 3-0 in the fifth following a sacrifice fly by Nick Eastham (Morehead, Ky.) and an RBI single by Shane Taylor (Morehead, Ky.).
Rio answered with a pair in the bottom of the fifth, but Midway responded with single runs in the next two stanzas. Ryan Davis (Paris, Ky.) had an RBI single in the sixth before Taylor stretched the advantage back to three with a sacrifice fly in the seventh.
Unfortunately for the visitors, the home squad got a game-tying three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh from AJ Thomas and a go-ahead two-run single from Clayton Surrell in the eighth to claim a 7-5 advantage.
Midway loaded the bases with two outs in the ninth, but they were left stranded as Hayden Simon nailed down his second save of the season with a strikeout to secure the win. In total, the Eagles left 12 runners on base in the loss.
Grant Stone (Lexington, Ky.) was delt the loss allowing five runs on three hits in his three innings of work. Blake Kincaid (Columbia, Tenn.) got the start and tossed five strong innings allowing two runs on five hits with four strikeouts.
Game 2: Midway 6, Rio Grande 1
Like the opener, the Eagles struck first scoring three in the opening frame. Ryan Davis doubled and Josh Halterman (Lexington, Ky.) reached on an one-out walk before Nick Eastham got on base via a two-out walk. All three came around to score when Shane Taylor ripped a three-run double to right field.
The three-run advantage remained intact until the fourth when Midway scored three runs on three hits. Noah Phillips (Greenville, Ky.) opened with a single before Grant Hotchkiss (Richmond, Ky.) reached on an error bringing Davis to the dish.
Following a pitching change, the graduate student from Paris, Ky. sent a 1-2 pitch over the right field fence for a three-run home run – his fourth homer of the season.
The six-run cushion was more than enough for Owen Clark, who was tossing a gem on the bump. The left-hander from Knoxville, Tenn. tossed six innings and allowed one unearned run on four hits. He also fanned seven to improve to 4-1 on the season.
Cameron Head (Salem, Ky.), meanwhile, entered with two on in the seventh before getting the final three outs to clinch the 6-1 victory.
