Box Score 2 MIDWAY, Ky. -- After opening the season with 13 non-conference outings, the Midway baseball team opened River States Conference on Sunday (March 5) when they hosted West Virginia Tech for a doubleheader at Tracy Farmer – Don Ball Stadium.
The Eagles dropped a 13-5 decision in game one, but bounced back and won game two by a final score of 4-3.
Following the split, Midway moves to 6-9 overall and 1-1 in league play, while WVU Tech moves to 6-11 overall and 1-1 in RSC play. The two squads will wrap up their three-game series on Monday with a nine-inning affair starting at noon ET.
Game 1: WVU Tech 13, Midway 5
Midway was forced to battle from behind the entire game after seeing the Golden Bears score one in the second, three in the third, and another in the fourth taking a 5-0 lead.
Trailing 6-4, the Eagles cut the deficit in half thanks to an RBI single by Ryan Davis (Paris, Ky.), but the visitors blew the game open after scoring six in the eighth and one in the ninth en route to the 13-5 victory.
Blake Kincaid (Columbia, Ky.) was dealt the loss after allowing six runs – five earned. He fanned seven in his 6.1 innings of work on the bump.
Offensively, Eli Glasscock (Danville, Ky.) led the way going 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs. Ryan Davis went 3-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored, while the duo of Barrett McGill (Bloomfield, Ky.) and Grant Hotchkiss (Richmond, Ky.) each went 2-for-4 in the loss.
Game 2: Midway 4, WVU Tech 3
After seeing WVU Tech take a 1-0 lead in the top of the second, Midway answered by scoring two runs on four hits in the home half of the second. Noah Phillips (Greenville, Ky.) and Grant Hotchkiss hit back-to-back RBI singles giving Midway the early advantage.
The Eagles added to their lead in the fourth when Eli Glasscock opened the inning with a single before later scoring on a sacrifice fly by Hotchkiss.
The Golden Bears cut the deficit in half with a run in the fifth before tying the game in the top of the sixth. With the game now tied, Midway regained the advantage with a run on two hits in the sixth.
Phillips bunted for a base hit to open the inning before Hotchkiss laid down a sacrifice bunt moving Phillips into scoring position. Following a popout and an intentional walk, Cameron Nichols (Owensboro, Ky.) laced an RBI single to left scoring Phillips from second.
Now leading 4-3, the Eagles brought in Jesse Komoroski (Memphis, Tenn.) to close the door in the seventh. He allowed a pair of singles to open the inning, but got a double play after winning an appeal at third base as Midway held on for the 4-3 victory.
The save is the third of the season for Komoroski, while Grant Stone (Lexington, Ky.) picked up the first win of his collegiate career. The freshman tossed a scoreless inning allowing one hit.
Owen Clark (Knoxville, Tenn.) got the start for the Eagles and pitched five strong innings. He allowed three runs on five hits with seven punchouts.
