Box Score MIDWAY, Ky. -- After splitting their doubleheader on Sunday, the Midway baseball team returned to Tracy Farmer – Don Ball Stadium on Monday when they wrapped up their three-game set with West Virginia Tech.
Trailing 15-11 entering the bottom of the ninth, the Eagles hit back-to-back-to-back home runs, including a walk-off solo home run that capped a five-run fifth that saw Midway clinch the series victory with a 16-15 come-from-behind win in the series finale.
With the win, Luther Bramblett's squad improves to 7-9 overall and 2-1 in River States Conference play, while the Golden Bears slip to 6-12 overall and 1-2 in league play following the loss.
WVU Tech scored four in the top of the seventh to stretch their lead to 15-8, but Midway slowly chipped away with one in the bottom of the seventh and two in the eighth before scoring five in the ninth.
Grant Hotchkiss (Richmond, Ky.) – who went 2-for-4 with five RBIs in the win – reached on a bases loaded walk in the seventh before Barrett McGill (Bloomfield, Ky.) and Eli Glasscock (Danville, Ky.) each hit a pair of run-scoring singles in the eight cutting the deficit to 15-11.
After stranding a WVU Tech runner at third in the top of the ninth, the Midway offense went back to work in the bottom half. Hotchkiss reached on a walk to open the inning before Ryan Davis (Paris, Ky.) ripped a single up the middle bringing Josh Halterman to the plate.
The sophomore from Lexington, Ky., turned on one, hitting a line drive down the left field line that cleared the fence for a three-run home run making the score 15-14.
The next batter, Cameron Nichols (Owensboro, Ky.), made it back-to-back jacks when he hit a solo shot to center field that tied the game at 15.
With the game now tied, Barrett McGill stepped to the plate. McGill – who hit a two-run home run in the first frame – clubbed his second homer of the day when he hit a walk-off solo home run to left center giving Midway the 16-15 victory.
The walk-off home run capped off a big day at the plate for McGill. The freshman scored 4-for-6 with five RBIs and two runs in the win.
Picking up the first victory of his collegiate career was Luke Richardson. The freshman from Franklin, Ky. tossed 2.1 innings and surrendered just one hit while striking out three in the win.
Offensively, Ryan Davis went 3-for-5 with an RBI and three runs, while Eli Glasscock went 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs.
The Eagles are set to return to the diamond on Wednesday (March 8) when they host Thomas More (Ky.) for a midweek matchup. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. ET.
