Box Score HUNTINGBURG, Ind. -- After wrapping up a four-game homestand earlier in the week, the Midway baseball team hit the road and headed to Huntingburg, Ind. for their River States Conference series opener with Oakland City (Ind.) at League Stadium on Friday.
Midway scored a run in the second and two more in the third, but they exploded in the fifth, scoring eight runs as they would cruise to a 12-1 run-rule victory in seven innings.
With the win, Luther Bramblett's squad improves to 19-14 overall and 13-3 in league play, while the Mighty Oaks fall to 22-13 overall and 6-10 in RSC play.
Eli Glasscock (Danville, Ky.) gave his team an early 1-0 lead with an RBI single in the second, but the lead grew to 3-0 after the visitors scored two more in the third.
Grant Hotchkiss (Richmond, Ky.) reached on a hit by pitch and scored on an error, while Ryan Davis (Paris, Ky.) singled before scoring on an error, giving Midway a 3-0 advantage.
The lead remained that way until the fifth, where Midway broke the game open, scoring eight runs on six hits. Ayden Sciandra (Jacksonville, Ky.) laced a two-run double, and Noah Phillips (Greenville, Ky.) had an RBI single before Hotchkiss made it 7-0 with an RBI double to left.
Davis and Josh Halterman (Lexington, Ky.) added back-to-back RBI groundouts bringing Cameron Nichols (Owensboro, Ky.) to the plate. The graduate student clubbed his seventh homer with a solo shot to right. Shane Taylor (Morehead, Ky.) then capped the big inning with an RBI triple giving Midway a commanding 11-0 lead.
Taylor – who went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run in the win – was at it again in the seventh when he stretched Midway's lead to 12-0 with an RBI double.
The Mighty Oaks plated an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh, but the run support was more than enough, thanks to another terrific start by the defending RSC Pitcher of the Week, Blake Kincaid.
The junior from Columbia, Tenn. tossed a complete game scattering seven hits as he improved to 3-2 with the win. The right-hander also fanned four to become Midway's all-time career strikeout leader.
Glasscock and Davis helped lead the way at the plate with two hits, an RBI, and a run, while Nichols added two hits, an RBI, and two runs. It was an overall balanced attack, with eight players recording at least one RBI in the victory.
The two squads will wrap up their three-game series on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at noon ET at League Stadium.
