Box Score LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. -- The Midway baseball team returned to the Grizzly Baseball Complex on Wednesday (May 17) morning to resume their game with Concordia (Neb.) which was postponed the night before due to inclement weather in the Lawrenceville, Ga. area.
The Eagles seemed to be in prime position to upset the No. 3 seed as they would take a 7-2 lead into the sixth inning. The Bulldogs, however, battled back scoring six in the bottom of the sixth and three in the bottom of the seventh en route to the 11-7 victory.
Midway struck first, scoring a run in the top of the third following a sacrifice fly by Grant Hotchkiss (Richmond, Ky.). The Bulldogs (40-17) answered right back with two in the bottom half of the third, but Midway responded with four in the top of the fourth.
Cameron Nichols (Owensboro, Ky.) and Shane Taylor (Morehead, Ky.) singled before Nick Eastham (Morehead, Ky.) walked to load the bases for Ayden Sciandra. The sophomore from Jacksonville, Fla. hit a long fly ball that snuck around the left field foul and over the fence for a grand slam – his fourth homer of the season – giving his team a 5-2 lead.
The Eagles continued to pad their lead in the fifth where they scored two runs on two hits. With two outs and the bases loaded, Taylor stepped in the box and delivered a two-run single to right field the pushed the lead to 7-2.
Unfortunately for the Eagles, their lead was short lived after Concordia regained the lead with a six-run sixth and a three-run seventh. The final three innings saw Midway record just one hit as the Bulldogs held on for the 11-7 victory.
Cameron Head (Salem, Ky.) was handed the loss for the Eagles after allowing sixth runs on five hits. Tyler Pyles (Louisville, Ky.) didn't allow a run in his 0.2 innings, while Jesse Komoroski (Memphis, Tenn.) allowed three runs on four hits in his two innings.
Dylan Burton (Somerset, Ky.) – who pitched three scoreless innings in Monday's win against Saint Xavier (Ill.) and started the original game on Tuesday night – pitched five strong innings in the loss, allowing two runs on four hits.
Offensively, the Eagles were led by Sciandra and Taylor, who posted multi-hit games. Sciandra went 3-for-3 with four RBIs and a walk, while Taylor chipped in two hits, two RBIs, and a run.
The 2023 campaign saw Luther Bramblett's squad post a 28-24 mark as they won the River States Conference regular season title for the first time in program history. The 28 wins, meanwhile, ties for the most wins in a single season in program history.
