RSC leader Point Park too strong for Midway in men's basketball tilt

Box Score

MIDWAY, Ky. - After withstanding one furious run by River States leader Point Park Thursday, Midway had no answer for a second as the unbeaten Pioneers held the Eagles scoreless for nearly seven minutes late in the second half to earn an 87-69 win in men's basketball play.

Point Park came into the game averaging 92.9 points per game, the third-best total in the NAIA, and seemed poised to boat race the Eagles after jumping out to a 30-14 lead on a Jalen Stamps 3-pointer halfway through the half.

Stamps proved to be a nuisance all game, finishing with 29 points on 7-of-10 shooting from 3-point range while adding eight assists. Many of those went to backcourt mate Jamisen Smith, who finished with 23 points.

The game was far from over, though, as Midway answered with an Isaiah Ramey 3 on the ensuing possession and held control for an extended period.

The Eagles rallied to cut the deficit all the way down to 37-35 at halftime, then continued their run out of the locker room. And when Donnie Miller hit a jumper 2:18 into the second half, the Eagles held a 46-42 lead, having outscored the Pioneers 32-12 in just under 13 minutes.

But those good feelings didn't last. Things went back-and-forth for a stretch before a Jo Valrie jump shot put the Pioneers back in front 57-56 and the lead remained the rest of the game.

The Eagles got within 69-67 on a Miller jump shot, but that was answered by 18 consecutive Pioneer points, with the Eagles going scoreless and 0-for-9 from the field for a 6-minute, 50-second stretch.

Point Park, which came in with a nation's best rebounding margin of plus-20.5 per game, also held a 48-32 edge on the glass, improving to 14-0 with a 4-0 mark in conference.

Midway, which drops to 4-7 and 2-3 in River States play, got 17 points from Miller, with Ramey and Nick Keeton adding 13 and 12 off the bench respectively.

Jalen Cincore had a team-best eight rebounds for the Eagles, who return to action Saturday with a 3 p.m. tip against Shawnee State (Ohio).
