Skid hits five as men's basketball rally at Rio falls short

Box Score

RIO GRANDE, Ohio - Midway fell into a 22-point hole and couldn't put together enough offense to get out, dropping its fifth straight game 79-66 on the road to River States Conference foe Rio Grande Tuesday.

After both teams opened the game 0-for-5 from the field, the Red Storm, who entered the night averaging an RSC-low 69.3 points per game, found a rhythm, making 14 of their next 22 shots to build up a 38-31 halftime lead.

The game was still within single-digits when a Rio Grande layup, followed by a Midway foul, a Midway technical foul and three made free throws produced a five-point possession to extend the lead to 53-39 with 14:29 remaining. That sequence began a 16-3 run over the next 3:57 that left the Eagles trailing 64-42.

Held in check to that point, Donnie Miller would catch fire with 10 points in the span of 2 minutes, 46 seconds, but the damage was already done, as Midway was unable to get the deficit any lower than nine.

Turnovers were a major issue for the Eagles, as they had 16 while forcing just nine. This led to 21 points for the Red Storm, 14 more than the Eagles had.

Playing in just his second game at Midway, Decoreio Smith provided a big boost off the bench, leading all players with 20 points on 8-of-15 shooting.

The Eagles are now 4-9 overall and 2-5 in River States games. They seemingly have a good chance to break their five-game skid on Saturday when Ohio Christian (5-11, 1-5) pays a visit to Midway in a game scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
