Box Score OWENSBORO, Ky. - Though the game was more competitive than what its become accustomed to, the Midway women's basketball team still got the outcome it desired in a road trip to Brescia Saturday.
Sereniti Webb scored seven of her 13 points in the fourth quarter and gave the Eagles the lead for good on a layup with 6:07 to play, as the Midway defense closed strong on its way to a 65-55 win over the Bearcats.
Though the Eagles did walk away with an eighth-consecutive double-digit win over the Bearcats, this one was far tighter than the final score indicated. Brescia, which lost 77-50 at Midway on Dec. 2, pulled even at 47 on a Lindsey Peyton free throw with 7:21 to play.
But Webb, who missed Midway's previous game, broke a nearly four-minute scoring drought when she scored off a great Jermyra Christian pass, putting the Eagles back ahead 49-47. It was one of six assists Christian had to go along with a 12-point, 12-rebound double-double.
Though it took the offense awhile to get going, the Midway defense made up for any struggles in the fourth quarter, holding the Bearcats to 2-of-14 shooting from the field.
The Eagles, who hit six 3-pointers in the first half, then essentially iced the game away with 58 seconds to go, when a triple by Lauren Walton made it 60-53.
Kassidy Daugherty tied Webb with a team-best 13 points while making a game-high three 3-pointers for the 10-14 Eagles, who improve to 6-8 in River States Conference play.
Midway will look to further improve its RSC standing on Tuesday when it hosts Indiana Kokomo at 5:30 p.m. The Eagles defeated the Cougars 89-79 in Kokomo on Dec. 12.
