Eagles fall in men's basketball nail-biter to Kokomo

Box Score

MIDWAY, Ky. - In one of the most exciting games its been a part of this season, the Midway men's basketball team, unfortunately, fell one basket short against Indiana Kokomo Tuesday night.

Off a Cougar missed free throw, Robbie Henry got a good look at a 3-pointer at the buzzer, but the shot didn't fall, and a valiant comeback effort by the Eagles ended in a heartbreaking 84-82 defeat.

Midway led for just 21 seconds all night and found itself in a 62-52 hole following a Hunter Jackson 3-pointer with just under 11 minutes to play.

But the Eagles answered immediately with a Jalen Cincore 3-pointer, which was immediately followed by three points from Donnie Miller, and the Cougar lead wouldn't extend beyond five points the rest of the night.

With two significant pieces of Eagle history within his reach, Miller had his highest scoring output of the season Tuesday with 27 points. With two more points, he will become just the second Midway player to reach 2,000 for his career and with eight more, he will surpass Kwon Evans as the program's all-time leading scorer.

The teams spent the rest of the night trading blows, with Kokomo finding just enough answers to keep the Eagles at bay.

The lead was cut to one on consecutive possessions -- 73-72 on Miller free throws and 75-74 on a Cincore layup -- before Kokomo answered with four straight points.

A Henry putback layup made it 81-79 with 47 seconds remaining and after a Kokomo layup, Will VanHook again made it a one point game, 83-82, on a 3-pointer with seven seconds to play.

A missed free throw gave the Eagles a chance, but it wasn't meant to be, as the Cougars were able to improve to 15-0 all-time against Midway.

Cincore had another excellent game, finishing with 19 points and a team-high seven rebounds and two steals. VanHook led all players with five assists.

Now 8-13 overall and 6-9 in the River States Conference, things don't get easier for the Eagles, who travel to face RSC West-leading St. Mary of the Woods (14-1) at 3 p.m. Saturday in Terre Haute, Ind.
