CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. - Midway played competitive for stretches, but Campbellsville ultimately proved too strong, sweeping the Eagles 25-16, 25-21, 25-11 in each team's Mid-South Conference opener Wednesday.
Despite never leading, the Eagles kept things close early in the first set. The teams traded seven consecutive points, with Midway eventually pulling even at 11 on a Joseph Boujaoude kill.
But that immediately gave way to a Gaston Barrionuevo kill at the other end, as the Tigers would go on to score nine of the next 11 points.
Things were even tighter in set two. After falling into a five-point hole, the Eagles responded with a 5-0 run, highlighted by two Jai'Den Chinnis kills.
The teams continued to battle, with Midway last tying the set at 18 on an attack error. Unfortunately, the Tigers, who received votes in the most recent NAIA national poll, were able to close again after back-to-back errors by the Eagles put them ahead for good.
Campbellsville then imposed its will immediately in set three, jumping out to a 10-0 lead with half of those points coming off Trevor Gruner services aces.
Playing for the first time since winning his third MSC Setter of the Week Award, Daniel Cogo led all players with 20 assists.
Chinnis and Boujaoude had eight and six kills respectively, with Jose Conde and Martin Walker finishing with eight and seven digs for the 2-5 Eagles.
The Eagles are back on the road for a busy weekend in Elgin, Ill., where they will play two matches on both Friday and Saturday in the Eagle Classic. This begins with a matchup against Calvin (Mich.) at 10 a.m. Friday.
