MIDWAY, Ky. - After opening the year with five splits in five doubleheaders, the Midway baseball team broke that monotonous pattern on Sunday with a pair of decisive wins over Siena Heights (Mich.).

Owen Clark allowed just one hit in five innings and Midway blew open a close game with a seven-run fifth inning to win the opener 10-0, then overcame an early deficit to complete the sweep with a 6-2 win in the second game.

GAME ONE

Clark was in control from the start, giving up one lone single in the fifth inning.

He finished with 10 strikeouts in five innings of work. He left Sunday second in the River States Conference with 35 strikeouts, while his 18.17 strikeouts per-nine innings is by far the most in the league.

The offense missed a few opportunities early, but broke through on a two-run, bases-loaded double by Shane Taylor in the third inning. The lead stretched to 3-0 on a Josh Halterman RBI single in the fourth before Midway was able to take advantage of Siena Heights self-destruction in the fifth.

Ayden Sciandra hit a bases-clearing, three-run double, which proved to be the only hit the Eagles had in the frame. Despite that, they managed to score four additional runs, as the Saints had five walks, three wild pitches, two hit batters and two errors in an inning that saw Midway bring 13 to the plate.

Sciandra finished the game with two hits and two runs scored, while he and Taylor both drove in three runs.

The Eagles loaded the bases in four of their six at-bats. Seven of their starters had hits and one of the two that didn't, DJ Morain, got on base four times.

GAME TWO

The Saints jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, before Halterman added another RBI single in the bottom half cut the deficit to 2-1. Midway then took the lead for good in the second inning on a monster, two-run home run to left field by Eli Glasscock.

Normally known more for speed than power, it was just the second homer of Glasscock's college career.

The lead then stretched to 5-2 on a two-run Brady Vaughn triple in the third and 6-2 on a Saints error in the sixth, one of four they committed in the game.

After a rough first inning, Dylan Burton settled in nicely, allowing just three hits and no runs over his next five innings, before turning over to Jesse Komoroski, who worked a scoreless seventh.

Morain had two hits while Sciandra scored two more runs as the Eagles improved to 7-7 on the year.

Before starting River States Conference play next weekend, Midway will play one more non-conference game, staying in-state to face Campbellsville at 2 p.m. Monday. The game was originally slated to be played Tuesday, but was moved up due to potential weather concerns.
