Box Score CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. - A slow start and missed opportunities were too much for the Midway baseball team to overcome, as the Eagles dropped a 5-3 non-conference game to in-state opponent Campbellsville Monday afternoon.
The Tigers scored in each of the first four innings, their lead reaching 5-0 on an RBI single by Chad McCann in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Midway, which had just one hit in its first four at-bats, finally got the offensive juices flowing in the top of the fifth. With the bases loaded, Eli Glasscock delivered a two-run single to cut the deficit to 5-2.
The Eagles had an opportunity to further cut into the lead, loading the bases again with just one out, but were unable to bring home any more runs.
Midway proceeded to put multiple runners on in each of their ensuing four at-bats as well, but wouldn't score again until the ninth, when a Barrett McGill RBI single made it a 5-3. The Tigers were able to record their first out on that same play, though, gunning down Yadiel Ortiz down at third base.
The Eagles still had a pulse, but Tiger reliever Mason Lee was able to get the final two batters out, dropping Midway to 7-8 on the season.
Nick Eastham, Josh Halterman and Brady Vaughn all had two hits for the Eagles, who begin River States Conference play at home against Alice Lloyd this weekend. Weather permitting, the series will begin with a single game at 2 p.m. Friday then a doubleheader beginning at noon Saturday.
