Cumberland rallies in all three sets in sweep of Eagle men's volleyball team

Box Score

LEBANON, Tenn. - Cumberland made big surges at the end of all three sets of a 25-17, 25-17, 25-23 men's volleyball sweep of Midway in a Mid-South battle Tuesday.

The Phoenix blew open what had been a tight matchup by scoring five-straight points to clinch the opener, then scored six of the final eight points in set two to secure back-to-back eight-point wins.

The Eagles had their best chance to get back into the match in set three. Aided by a pair of kills by Devonte Harmon and Jai'Den Chinnis, Midway jumped ahead 9-2.

The lead was still 22-18 before another late rally completed the sweep, with Cumberland putting together a 7-1 run.

Jacob Whyte had two of his match-high nine kills in that stretch, while also contributing the final point on a service ace. Cumberland finished the match with a 10-2 edge in aces.

Chinnis led Midway with eight kills. Daniel Cogo had 16 assists, with Jose Conde and Joseph Boujaoude both recording seven digs for the 2-10 Eagles, who fall to 0-2 in the MSC.

The Eagles will play at Marshall Gymnasium for the first time since their season-opener on Jan. 27, when they host Georgetown, the NAIA's No. 9 team, at 7 p.m.
