Box Score MIDWAY, Ky. - Reigning River States Pitcher of the Week Owen Clark delivered another gem, and Midway got several clutch, two-out hits, opening its River States Conference title defense with a 10-6 win over Alice Lloyd in each team's league opener Saturday.
The game started about as poorly as it could have for Midway, as the visiting Eagles scored a run off an error and had the bases loaded with no one out. Luckily, a big play seemed to turn the game around, as an Aaron Rothballer line drive landed in the glove of second baseman Eli Glasscock, who doubled Carson Tate up at second base.
That began a run of 14 consecutive outs recorded by Clark, with the streak actually ending on a dropped third strike in the fifth. Following the first-inning double play, Clark struck out the next five batters, as he finished with 12 -- the most he's had in a Midway uniform -- while allowing just three hits with two walks over six innings.
Britten Robinson then began the scoring with an RBI single in the bottom of the second, before Midway went ahead 3-1 on two-out RBI singles by Ayden Sciandra and Eli Glasscock.
That began a trend, as five of Midway's runs came with two outs. Josh Halterman had the first of his three RBIs with a two-run, two-out single in the fourth, then Robinson scored via a two-out error in the fifth.
The Eagles blew things open in the eighth, batting around and scoring four times to go ahead 10-1 before Alice Lloyd made it closer with a five-run ninth.
Five Midway players finished with multiple hits, Glasscock leading the way with three. Sciandra added a game-high three runs as the Eagles improved to 8-8 on the season and are now 6-2 all-time in conference openers.
The two teams will return to action on Sunday in a doubleheader at Tracy Farmer-Don Ball Stadium, with game one beginning at noon.
