Baseball drops back-and-forth RSC battle with Oakland City

Box Score

MIDWAY, Ky. - In a game of wild momentum swings, Midway couldn't make enough plays as it fell to Oakland City (Ind.) 8-5 in the final game of a weekend River States Conference baseball series Saturday.

The Eagles put their first three runners on in the first inning, loading the bases then taking a 2-0 lead on back-to-back sacrifice flies by Shane Taylor and Barrett McGill. The offense would go cold after that, as Mighty Oak starter Gehrig Tenhumberg overcame a rough start by retiring 21 batters in a row.

For awhile, it didn't seem to matter, as Eagle starter Jackson Lee rolled into the sixth inning with a no-hitter.

Even when it was broken up, Lee, who finished the day with a career-best eight strikeouts, got great help from his defense. After an infield single and an overthrow to first, catcher McGill made an excellent play, backing up the throw and tossing out Marco Arocho as he attempted to reach second base, leaving Oakland City with two out and nobody on.

But as it as for much of Midway's 13-game losing streak, disaster struck, and the Mighty Oaks proceeded to score five runs in the inning. They first tied the game on a two-run double by Noah Baugher before Midway walked five straight batters, the last three of which came with the bases loaded.

The Eagles got some offense going in the last two innings. Down 7-2 in the eighth, Nick Eastahm hit a solo home run to left field.

And after the Oaks scored again in ninth, Midway put together a two-out rally of its own.

Following a single, walk and wild pitch, Taylor and Ayden Sciandra who pinch ran for McGill after he walked, were driven home by Preston Howard on a single. It was the second two-RBI game in as many days for Howard.

Next batter Eastham was then able to work the count full, only for Oak reliever Tommy Johnson to put him down swinging for the final out, dropping the Eagles to 12-21 overall and 4-11 in the RSC.

Midway's next five games will be on the road, starting with a non-conference, in-state matchup against Lindsey Wilson at 3 p.m. Tuesday.
