Box Score BECKLEY, W.V. - Given the opportunity to duplicate one of the highlight moments of his college career Thursday, Barrett McGill was up to the task.
Just moments after his team re-took the lead, McGill put an exclamation point on a thrilling conference win, delivering a three-run triple to highlight a five-run 10th inning, as the Eagles topped West Virginia Tech 9-4 in the opening game of a three-game River States baseball series.
The Eagles entered extras after surrendering a 4-1 lead, as two-out error allowed the Bears to bring home the tying run in the bottom of the eighth inning.
But after the teams traded scroeless ninths, Midway immediately took control, loading the bases with no one out, then going back ahead 5-4 after Nick Eastham was hit by a pitch.
McGill's triple then tripled the size of the Eagles advantage, his shot going all the way to the wall after shooting past the outstretched glove of Tech centerfielder Logan Spurlock.
Thursday's finish was eerily similar to the last time the two teams squared off. In that game, which happened just one year and one day prior, McGill had five RBIs including a walk-off home run to cap a five-run ninth inning in a 16-15 Eagle win.
Midway has now won five in a row to improve to 12-8 overall. Already the only team left unbeaten in conference play going into the week, the Eagles ran their RSC record to 4-0.
The two team will play twice more in Beckley on Friday, with the first game of the doubleheader scheduled to begin at noon.
