Box Score 2 KOKOMO, Ind. - Midway baseball concluded the regular season portion of its conference schedule in wild fashion Saturday, as the Eagles and Indiana Kokomo traded the lead seven times in a doubleheader split.
Midway, which won the first of a three-game series 6-3 Friday, earned the series win with a 13-11 victory in the opener, before the Cougars rallied to win game two 7-6, ending Midway's eight-game RSC win streak.
GAME ONE
Scoring in the electrifying series of games began in fittingly electrifying fashion when Barrett McGill hit a grand slam in the third inning. The Eagle lead would only last an inning though, as the Cougars responded with a six-run fourth, capped by a Tahj Borom three-run home run.
The teams would continue to swap big innings. The Eagles put up a four-run fifth before the Cougars scored four times in the seventh to take a 10-8 lead.
Undeterred, the Eagles loaded the bases with no one out in the eighth and Shane Taylor immediately cleared them with a three-run triple to right, putting Midway back up 11-10. Taylor, who also had three hits and three runs in the opener, has recorded multiple hits in seven consecutive games, batting .655 with 13 RBIs in that stretch.
That advantage extended to 13-10 on a McGill sacrifice fly and Zane Patton RBI single, and Midway withstood a leadoff home run by Jarod Gillespie in the ninth inning to secure the two-run win.
Ayden Sciandra also had three hits and gave Midway an 8-6 lead on a two-run single in the fifth inning.
GAME TWO
Things didn't calm down much in the second game. The Eagles had six hits in the second inning and jumped out to a 4-0 lead thanks to a two-run double by Nick Eastham and RBI singles by Britten Robinson and Sciandra.
As they did in the opener, IUK responded, tying the game with a four-run fourth then taking a 5-4 lead on a fifth-inning error by Midway.
The fireworks continued in the sixth. The Eagles retook a 6-5 lead when Sciandra completed his five-RBI day with a two-run, two-out double to right-center.
But after the first batter was retired, the Cougars were finally able to pull ahead for good. Following a pair of hits, a Jacob Medvescek sacrifice fly tied the game with two outs.
Next batter Kasey Ross then delivered the game-winning hit, an RBI double, and Midway was unable to answer, recording just one single in its final at-bat.
Sciandra, Taylor, Eastham, Yadiel Ortiz and Garrett Worthington all had two hits in the loss for Midway, which finishes conference play 12-12. The 20-22 Eagles close the regular season against Kentucky State at home Tuesday.
