MIDWAY, Ky. - Still just 13 games into her college career,
A'Lyrica Hughes is already establishing herself as one of the most dominant defensive forces in the River States Conference.
For the third time this season, the Midway freshman guard has been named the RSC Women's Basketball Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced Monday afternoon.
Hughes continued to be a defensive nightmare for opponents on the perimeter, recording seven steals in a game against Lourdes (Ohio) on Dec. 30 and five more against Indiana East on Saturday. Hughes entered Monday sixth in the nation at 4.0 steals per-game and has recorded five or more six times.
She also added 21 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists
in a 78-58 win over IU East. All three were team highs, with the scoring and assist totals both being career highs.
Hughes is Midway's leading rebounder at 6.8 per-game, while here 13.6 points an outing are the second best total for the Eagles, who will look to improve to 2-1 in RSC play at Alice Lloyd Wednesday.
The game was originally slated to tip 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, but was moved back 24 hours due to harsh travel conditions created by a weekend winter storm.
