Sprint football prepares for homecoming matchup with Oakland City

MIDWAY, Ky. - Fresh off of clinching a spot in the Midwest Sprint Football League playoffs, Midway's record-setting offense will look to entertain a homecoming crowd against a winless opponent Saturday.

The 3-2 Eagles, who are currently the No. 2 seed in the MSFL Black Division, host an 0-5 Oakland City team that has lost all of its games by at least 34 points.

LAST WEEK: MIDWAY 59, QUINCY 22

After falling behind 15-6 in the first quarter, the Eagles dominated in all three phrases, putting up 50 unanswered points while finishing the game with the second-most points ever scored by an MSFL team.

The dominant effort led to a clean sweep of the MSFL weekly awards. Quarterback Christian Carter (333 yards, five touchdowns passing) was Co-Offensive Player of the Week, defensive back Preston Moore (two interceptions) was Defensive Player of the Week and kicker Kadin Fitch (4-for-5 PATs, 2-for-2 field goals) was Special Teams Player of the Week.

Entering Saturday, Carter has 1,509 yards and 17 touchdowns through the air. With at least three games to play, he needs 421 yards and five touchdown passes to break MSFL records in each category.

Carter's top two receivers Quincy Barber (27 catches, 542 yards) and Ayden Bauwens (25, 506) are also both within striking distance of the league's all-time single-season receiving record of 645 yards.

Against Quincy, Barber tied an MSFL single-game record with 11 catches for an Eagle-record 167 yards. Bauwens also tied a team record with three touchdowns while recording 91 yards on six catches.

Moore had two of the four interceptions recorded by a defense that leads the MSFL in sacks (13), interceptions (12) and fumble recoveries (10).

Freshman Tristian Euell already has a Midway single-season record five sacks and enters Saturday with 11.5 tackles for-loss, just shy of the record of 12 set by Peyton Brazier last season.

SCOUTING THE MIGHTY OAKS

To say scoring has been a struggle for Oakland City would be an understatement. In five games, the Mighty Oaks have scored just 20 points, scoring just three touchdowns while allowing six to opposing defenses.

The offense is averaging just 111.6 yards per-game with a season high of 151.

One area Oakland City has been good in in pass defense. The secondary is allowing just 145.4 passing yards per-game, second only to undefeated Calumet (113.8), which is giving up just 1.8 points per-game.

Gabriel Anyamene Jr. leads the team with 22 tackles while Koelby Schroeder had two interceptions.

MATCHUP HISTORY

In 17 games as a program, the Mighty Oaks have just one win, a 14-0 victory over the Eagles in week two of last season.

In 100-plus degree heat, the Midway offense mustered just 59 yards and six first downs, as OCU held the ball for nearly 44 minutes and scored on two long third-quarter touchdown drives.

The teams also played in 2023, a game Midway won 20-12.

POSTSEASON OUTLOOK

The field for the four-team MSFL playoffs has been set, and seeding is likely to be locked in after this weekend.

Currently, Saint Mary of the Woods (4-0) and Midway are set to represent the Black Division while Calumet (4-0) and Bellarmine (3-2) will represent the Red Division.

The Pomeroys and Crimson Wave were scheduled to play in Calumet last Saturday, but the game was canceled due to weather and will not be made up.

If Saint Mary of the Woods defeats 0-5 Quincy on Friday, it will lock up the No. 1 seed in the Black, while Calument will secure the No. 1 seed in the Red with a win over Bellarmine Saturday. The Crimson Wave defeated the Knights 48-0 in their first meeting this season.

That would mean the Eagles, as the No. 2 seed in the Black Division, would travel to face Calumet in the opening round on Nov. 8. The Wave come to Midway in the regular season finale Nov. 1.

Saturday's game against Oakland City, which will include a homecoming celebration at halftime, kicks off at 7 p.m.
