MIDWAY, Ky. - The Midway and Calumet (Ind.) sprint football teams will be getting very familiar with each other over the next two weeks.
The Crimson Wave enter the final week of the Midwest Sprint Football League regular season with a record of 5-0 and the No. 1 seed in the MSFL Red Division locked up.Â
On the other end, 4-2 Midway has secured the No. 2 spot out of the Black Division, meaning the two teams will square off in Calumet in the opening round of the league playoffs on Nov. 8.
But before that happens, they will get a good look at each other this Saturday, when they meet in the regular season finale at the Midway Turf Field. Here is a look ahead to the matchup, which will also serve as senior day for the Eagles.
LAST WEEK: MIDWAY 78, OAKLAND CITY 0
The Eagles easily shattered the previous MSFL record for points in a game (63), putting up 70 before halftime before a running clock was implemented over the final two quarters.
An offense that gained 625 yards was led by
Christian Carter, who threw for 322 yards and five touchdowns, with two of his scoring passes going to
Ayden Bauwens, who finished with 189 yards on six catches.
Carter now owns the MSFL record for touchdown passes in a season with 22 and needs just 93 yards Saturday to break the league yardage record of 1,923. Meanwhile, Bauwens now owns the single-season receiving yardage record, accumulating 695.
The passing game is countered by a league-best running attack (197.7 yards per-game) headlined by
Demari Edelen, theÂ
MSFL Offensive Player of the Week.Â
Edelen had the first 200-yard game in Midway history, gashing Oakland City for 220 yards and two touchdowns. The freshman now has a program-record 614 yards this season.
The offense was aided by a defense that surrendered negative-12 yards while forcing seven turnovers and returning three interceptions for touchdowns.
Preston Moore had two of those pick-sixes to win MSFL Defensive Player of the Week honors for a second straight week. The other touchdown return came from
Martylan Boston, who had two interceptions of his own.
The Eagles have forced 29 turnovers this season, 13 more than anyone else in the league. Midway is first in the MSFL in both interceptions (17) and fumble recoveries (12) and is also second in the league at 18.8 points per-game and 14 sacks.
SCOUTING THE CRIMSON WAVE
Since starting the 2023 season 0-3, Calumet has gone 18-1, winning league titles each of the last two seasons.
The Wave have routinely been driven by a strong defense and that's particularly true this season.
Calumet is currently allowing an astonishing 2 points per-game. The unit is by far the stingiest against both the run (23 yards per-game) and the pass (102.8) in the conference.
The Crimson Wave is also scoring 35.6 points per-game, the highest point total in program history, led by the the league's second-best rushing attack (184.8 yards per-game). Kaydarious Jones leads the team with 284 yards while Jamall Warnell has run for seven touchdowns.
If there's one hole in the Crimson Wave's resume it's in their schedule, as their five wins have come against teams with a combined record of 3-15. This is their first game against Midway while an Oct. 18 game against 5-0 St. Mary of the Woods was canceled due to weather.
MATCHUP HISTORY
This is by far the best team Midway has brought into a matchup against Calumet, which has handily defeated the Eagles each of the last three seasons.
In those previous meetings, the Crimson Wave have won by the combined score of 122-10,
including a 50-7 victory a season ago in which the Eagles gained just 86 yards of total offense.
Saturday will mark the first time Midway has hosted a game against Calumet. Kickoff is scheduled for noon.
Prior to the game, the Eagles will honor 13 departing seniors.
