Milner wins 1,500, Eagle men finish fifth at conference outdoors

RIO GRANDE, Ohio - Carson Milner earned an outdoor championship in the 1,500-meter run, as Midway nabbed five all-conference finishes to jump to fifth place in the final standings of the River States Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

The Eagles finished with 98 points. Rio Grande won in dominant fashion, recording 284 points, well ahead of Shawnee State (120) and Indiana Kokomo, who were second and third.

After finishing second in the event by 0.28 seconds a year ago, Milner came out atop the 1,500 in 3:58.65 Saturday, more than three seconds ahead of Kasy Science of Rio, the runner-up.

This is the first River States championship for Milner, the reining River States Runner of the Week.

He had the best showing of the five Eagles who finished in the top-three Saturday.

Abdul Salaah and Tyler Withers took second in the 100- and 200-meter dash respectively. Salaah finished in 10.83 seconds with Withers crossing in 22.25.

In a photo finish in the 5,000-meter run, Josiah Kocis placed third in 15:13.45, just .31 seconds ahead of fourth-place Milner. This was the second all-conference finish of the weekend for Kocis, the runner-up in Friday's 10,000.

In field events, Ben Jones came in third in triple jump with a top distance of 12.75 meters.

The Eagles got one other top-five showing in discus from Cole Sexton, who threw 44.41 meters. Sexton also placed sixth with a throw of 13.96 in shot put.

Other individual scorers were Connor Messer in the 800 (seventh, 1:59.49), Harry Van Why IV (seventh, 12.42) and Karl Livingston Jr. (eighth, 12.20) in triple jump and Raush Gill in the discus (eighth, 39.28)

In relays, the 4x100 relay team of Corey Banks, Withers, Brayden Carson and Salaah was sixth in 44.95 and the 4x400 team of Elle Mugisha, Messer, Steven Meyer and Hunter Belville were eighth in 3:36.26.

Still looking to get competitors into the NAIA Outdoor National Championships, the Eagles' final opportunity will be at the Lee Last Chance in Cleveland, Tenn. on May 10.
