EVANSVILLE, Ind. - For the third year in a row, Midway made it to the finals of the River States Conference Men's Tennis Championships, only to be thwarted by the immovable object that is Oakland City.
After grinding out a 4-2 semifinal win over Brescia Saturday morning, the Eagles ran out of gas against the 19th-ranked Mighty Oaks in a 4-0, final-round loss.
The semis were originally scheduled for Friday, but got delayed due to heavy rain at the host site.
SEMIFINAL: MIDWAY 4, BRESCIA 2
The clutch play of
Ferran Clapes proved critical as Midway survived a very tight battle with the third-seeded Bearcats.
Clapes and
German Collado clinched the doubles point with a slim 7-6 win over Matthew Parsons and Arthur Happel at the No. 1 position.
After
Axel Sperling (6-3, 6-4 at No. 1) and Collado (6-1, 6-3 at No. 4) began singles play with straight-set wins, securing the clinching point proved difficult, as the Bearcats earned wins at No. 3 and 6 singles to get within 3-2, then forced a third set at the remaining positions.
But at No. 2, Clapes, who won the first set 6-4 before losing the second 6-3, finally got over the hump against Diego Launa. Clapes jumped ahead 3-0 before losing the next three points.
The two then traded games before Clapes won the next two to finally end the match with a 6-4 victory.
Sperling was part of two wins as well, teaming with
Izan Casado to beat Jonathan Felix and Sebastian Munoz 6-3 at No. 3 doubles.
FINAL: OAKLAND CITY 4, MIDWAY 0
Midway did secure an upset win at No. 1 doubles, where Collado and Clapes defeated Jose Perez and Nelson Ramos, the No. 18-ranked team in the NAIA, 6-3. But the Oaks secured the point with wins at the second and third spots.
OCU then locked up another championship with straight-set wins in the final three singles spots, clinching the 2025 crown via Aleksander Ivancevic's 6-1, 6-2 win over
Aleksey Granitsa at No. 5.
The Eagles, who were 5-0 against RSC opponents other than Oakland City, finish the year with an 8-9 record.
